#3 Denver Women’s Lacrosse (15-0, 4-0) continued their historic season with a sweep. The Pio’s took down the Stanford Cardinal Thursday night at Peter Barton Stadium and Sunday morning trounced Xavier on the road to remain unblemished in BIG EAST play.
While first impressions may indicate Denver is driven by a powerful offense (which it is), it is the stingy defense that allows long scoring runs while shutting down opponents. Denver is second in the nation in caused turnovers (12.62 pg), second in the nation in draw control percentage (,625), seventh on save percentage (.510), and number one in scoring defense (5.92). It is hard to win in lacrosse without the ball. Continue reading Denver Women’s Lacrosse on a Tear, Punish Stanford and Xavier→
Denver women’s lacrosse (12-0, 2-0) continued its historic undefeated season, crushing a pair of Big East foes with a pair of home wins, first thumping Villanova 17-4 this past Saturday and then bullying the Butler University Bulldogs, 19-4 on Wednesday. The Peter Barton Stadium sweep kept #3-ranked Denver in the hunt to become the best women’s lacrosse team in the country. Continue reading #3 Denver Routs Villanova & Butler 36-8, Moves to 12-0→

It was the 1974 school year. The time of President Nixon’s resignation, the Middle East oil embargo, and a Swedish rock group called ABBA was all the rage in Europe. That same school year, four female lacrosse players joined the DU men’s lacrosse ‘B’ team, playing against Air Force in Colorado Springs to open the season. The final score, an 18-1 AFA drubbing of Denver, was the least important event that day, as players from both teams dealt with a new trend that was sweeping the nation – women playing college sports. It felt like 2016 again and DU men’s lacrosse (4-3) let the good times roll. Peter Barton Stadium was packed, lacrosse alumni lined the balcony of the Cable Center and Denver played with skill and speed, demolishing Ohio State, 17-12. A team many insiders doubted at the start of the season has now defeated #15 Ohio State, #12 North Carolina and came up just a late goal short on the road against #4 Duke. Over her 17 years at the helm of #9 Denver women’s lacrosse (6-0), head coach Liza Kelly has been elevating the University of Denver program by winning conference titles, earning NCAA berths and advancing in the NCAA Tournament. However, Sunday morning her team reached another significant milestone with an 8-7 road win against powerhouse #5 Maryland. Maryland was 160-5 at home under head coach Cathy Reese heading into Sunday’s game. Maryland has garnered 14 women’s lacrosse titles while Denver has done everything but crack the top 4-5 programs in women’s lacrosse. That all changed Sunday morning. Continue reading Kelly’s Heroes Secure Top 5 Win Over Maryland 8-7→
#9 Denver women’s lacrosse has been anything but ‘under the radar’ this season, going 5-0 to start the season, while defeating #21 Michigan Thursday evening, 7-5, at Peter Barton Stadium. The men’s lacrosse team, 3-2, has been largely unheralded despite a close road defeat to Duke, 14-13 in OT, earlier this season. The men’s team traveled to Chapel Hill Saturday and led practically wire-to-wire but needed clutch goals in the final minutes to secure a tight 9-8 win over the #12 Tar Heels.
