Denver soccer teams and volleyball ended a challenging week on the road, returning home for the start of school this week.
Women’s soccer (3-3-2) earned a thrilling win at Colorado State on Sunday behind the foot of Sami Feller. Feller scored five minutes into the match but it was her second goal with the game tied 1-1 at 90 minutes that stunned the Rams in Fort Collins. As the game clock wound down, Feller received a deep pass from Megan Prazich and gently chipped the ball over the Colorado State keeper for a 2-1 Denver victory. DU men’s soccer (3-0-1) re-entered the Top 25 earlier in the week and traveled east to face a Top 10 side, #9/13 Maryland, and a Top 25 Side in #19/9 Georgetown. Denver emerged with a win against the University of Maryland, propelled by two first-half goals in front of 3,000+ fans. The Pios then traveled to Georgetown to complete the east coast swing, overcoming a 1-0 deficit to earn a 1-1 road draw. Denver women’s soccer (2-1-1) took on ASU Sunday at Pioneer Field, playing the Sun Devils even for 90 minutes in a 1-1 draw. Both goals were scored in the first half as ASU got on the board at the 7-minute mark before Denver’s Camryn MacMillan countered with a tally fifteen minutes later as the teams drew even. From 2005 to 2014, DU Athletics had a featured broadcaster, Mitch Hyder, who was best known for his radio play-by-play for the University of Denver’s men’s basketball team. A jack-of-all-trades, Hyder also did play-by-play for women’s basketball, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, gymnastics, and men’s and women’s lacrosse. The transition to a new voice has taken time but current play-by-play announcer, Tyler Maun has assumed the mantle as the voice of the Denver Pioneers.
We told you about North Dakota’s rough series sweep against Denver hockey (4-4, 0-2) in Grand Forks. The Pioneers return home this week to face Western Michigan in an important home NCHC series for Denver to hopefully regain confidence, especially on the offensive end which has sputtered to a bad 1 goal per game in their past three games. Denver went 1-2-1 for Halloween weekend – a result that spooked even the hardiest of DU fans. In what was supposed to be a battle for conference titles and conference leads turned into a mixed bag of rotten caramel apples, toothbrushes, and stale Good & Plenty. It took a Halloween matinee yesterday by Denver Women’s Soccer to finally deliver a treat during the weekend homestand when they clinched their 12th conference title with a win over South Dakota State. A volleyball – soccer doubleheader at DU on Saturday. Watch DU volleyball battle for first place against Omaha at 1:00 pm at Hamilton Gym. Go to Crimson & Gold on University for a late lunch and the Campus Lounge on Evans to refuel. Go to the 7:00 pm Denver men’s soccer match against Omaha as the first place Pioneers play their conference rival.
We told you about Denver hockey team’s (4-2-0) trip out east. After two good periods, they have given up 10 goals and scored only 2 goals over the last four periods as they dropped two games to Providence College and Boston College. DU has a bye week to regroup and prepare for a road trip to North Dakota in two weeks.
Denver’s other fall teams are all fighting for regular-season titles.
