Two College Soccer Rules that Should be Adopted by the Pros

The Clock is the Clock

The running clock in professional soccer is a strange aberration. Where most other sports share the game-time with their players and fans, in soccer, both are left to guess when a match really ends. In the collegiate game, the game clock shows the actual time and counts down to zero. College officials can and do stop the field clock for nine specific situations. Denver Men’s and Women’s Soccer Teams Complete a Solid Week

Denver men’s (2-0-2) and women’s soccer (2-0-4) had a solid week in non-conference action. Women’s soccer started their season with four consecutive ties. Then, last week they added two consecutive wins over Northern Colorado from the Big Sky Conference on Thursday and Sunday against North Carolina State from the ACC. The 2-0 win over Northern Colorado was expected but the 4-2 win over the Wolfpack was a big boost for new women’s head coach Julianne Sitch. Pioneers Pile Up Victories Aside a Stunning Defeat

The sudden end of the #1 seed DU women’s soccer (11-4-4, 8-0-1) season came Sunday afternoon during the Summit League Tournament semifinals at Pioneer Field. The underdog #4 Oral Roberts Golden Eagles (10-9-2, 4-5-0) bunkered in during the game, packing the back line, failing to go on the offensive, and hoping for overtime and a shootout. After a scoreless regulation draw and extra time, the Golden Eagles got their wish and took down DU 3-2 during PK’s.  Denver outshot ORU 14-3 and shots-on-goal 5-3 but the Pioneers could not find the back of the net. The final result marked a shocking end to DU’s post-season hopes after an undefeated conference regular season.  #2 seed, South Dakota State fell to Omaha as the top two seeds were booted from the Summit League Tournament. Mixed Results For Denver Athletes Heading into Homecoming Week

DU Men’s soccer (7-2-5, 2-0-2) played to a frustrating 1-1 draw against Kansas City Saturday night. Three straight draws and less than one goal scored per game over their last eight games have shown yet another season where DU struggles to score goals. Denver appears to still have a solid back line, giving up occasional dangerous runs, and consistently controls the midfield. Unfortunately, the front-line players lack the creativity to finish and take the pressure off their back line.  DU has two road trips (Eastern Illinois 10/29 and Lindenwood (11/2) and a finale against Western Illinois (11/5) at Pioneer Field to find some scoring magic. Denver is in a tight regular season race with Omaha, Kansas City, and Oral Roberts separated by a game or less. Continue reading Mixed Results For Denver Athletes Heading into Homecoming Week →

Denver Athletics Conclude Solid Week with Four Teams in Action

Denver volleyball (11-7, 5-2) was stunned by Omaha this past Tuesday at home in a 3-0 loss but went on the road with a vengeance, defeating Kansas City (3-1) and Oral Roberts (3-0). One of DU’s student-athlete success stories this season is senior outside hitter Memphis Glasgow. She was a seldom-used player prior to this season but is now second on the team with 149 kills, trailing only transfer Jordan Lockwood. Glasgow had 33 kills total in her three prior seasons but patiently waited for her shot and played a necessary support and practice role. She is also second on the team in scoring.  Now, Glasgow is delivering in a big way for the Pioneers, a reward for her hard work, positive attitude, and patience. Denver Athletics Enjoys Undefeated Weekend

Denver men’s soccer (6-2-2, 2-0) traveled to Omaha Saturday to play the Mavericks in a rivalry match. Denver dominated the first half, outshooting the Mavericks 8-2 but the break ended 0-0.  DU struggled to regain control early in the second half but an Aidan O’Toole feed to Ben Smith, open at the top of the box, put Denver up  1-0. Denver controlled the balance of play, limiting Maverick options to score. DU bunkered in the final 10 minutes but Omaha could never generate a solid offensive opportunity to knot the match. It is a quick turnaround as Denver travels to face Virginia Tuesday in Charlottesville at 4:00 pm MT. Continue reading Denver Athletics Enjoys Undefeated Weekend →

Pioneers Enjoy Success at Home

Denver Triathlon participated in the Longmont Oktoberfest Sprint Saturday morning against the nation’s top teams and finished second, trailing only defending national champion Arizona State University. Sunday morning, the teams competed in a two-event Mile High Relays (swimming and running) on the Denver campus, a first for the program, to include swimming and running. Denver finished second once again and is proving that they may be within shouting distance of a national title in their newest sport. Still, Arizona State continues to look like the dominant program in Women’s Triathlon. Look for a repeat of this event next season and a possible full collegiate triathlon event at Aurora Reservoir. Shorthanded Denver Volleyball Rallies for Weekend Sweep

A reeling 3-5 DU volleyball team returned to Colorado playing three matches in The Thin Air Challenge against teams with a combined 21-7 record. The team was missing head coach Tom Hogan, out with testicular cancer, and the Pioneers’ interim head coach Jim Stone was out with Covid-19. The Pioneers were down to one coach, assistant Andrea Beaty, when they headed to Colorado Springs to face Air Force (7-2). The Pioneers assigned spot coaching duties to their players and Beaty led the Pioneers to a 3-0 win. The Pioneers returned to Hamilton Gym to face a 7-2 San Francisco squad. After undergoing chemotherapy, Hogan was able to return to the bench as an advisor for the home series. Once again, Beaty guided the Pioneers to a 3-1 win over the Dons. Denver concluded the tournament at Hamilton Gym against UC San Diego (7-4). Denver swept the Tritons to go 3-0 on the weekend and move back above .500 at 6-5.
