Denver Falls to Third in Final Day of NCAA Skiing Championships, CU Jumps DU and Utah for Crown

Back at Howelsen Hill for the last day of the NCAA Skiing Championships and the Nordic 20k Classic. It was a bluebird day but a tough result for the DU ski team as they fell from second place to a distant third. Going into the day, second-place Denver was a long shot to close the gap on Utah but third-place CU proved it could be done in the women’s 20k as they narrowed the Utes lead to 17 points. Then, CU finished 1st and 3rd in the men’s event to jump Utah by two points for the team championship. Denver finished third. Denver Women’s Lacrosse Falls Late to #1 Northwestern

Denver women’s lacrosse (3-3) traveled to Evanston, Illinois to face the #1 Northwestern Wildcats. Before Friday’s game, Denver had two narrow losses to then, #10 Michigan and #9 Maryland.  The defending national champion Wildcats are loaded with the 2023 Tewaaraton Award winner in Izzy Scane and a host of other dangerous players but DU gave them all they could handle for most of the game. Northwestern scored four of the game’s last six goals in the fourth quarter to pull away, 14-10. However, Denver held the lead in the third quarter and tied Northwestern in the fourth quarter. Ultimately, the Wildcats pulled away in the final eleven minutes to take the game. Continue reading Denver Women’s Lacrosse Falls Late to #1 Northwestern

Denver Remains in 3rd After Day 2, Utah Seizes First Place

The Utah Utes woke up today. The Utah men dominated with 2nd, 3rd and 12th place finishes in the men’s 7.5 km Interval Start Freestyle at Howelsen Hill in Steamboat. Utah women finished first in the women’s 7.5 km Interval Start Freestyle plus a 15th and 19th finish. Denver met or beat expectations on the women’s side with Selma Anderson in 10th, Henrietta Saeterdahl Semb in 11th and Hanna Ray in 14th. On the men’s side, DU’s Florian Knopf finished 5th, Andreas Kirkeng 10th and Krystof Zatioukal in 21st. I was hopeful that Andreas would make the podium. DU fell 4.5 points behind CU and the Utes pulled ahead of DU by 61.5 points. Continue reading Denver Remains in 3rd After Day 2, Utah Seizes First Place

Denver Ski Team Sits in 3rd Place After Day 1 of NCAA Championships

O.K., let me begin with an apology. I have not done a good job keeping LetsGoDU readers up to date on the DU ski team this season. Work (and procrastination) has put me behind the eight ball and we are already into day one of the NCAA Championships in Steamboat – the scene of Denver’s last NCAA ski championship (#24). I nervously followed the team today in their first event from Denver (ugh). The Giant Slalom was completed today and three days remain. I am headed up to Steamboat to provide live coverage on Friday. Update: DU Men’s Soccer Impacts Conference Realignment Options

College soccer season is still nearly seven months away but the Summit League and University of Denver have several key decisions that will need to be considered and made by this summer.

DU men’s soccer, a marquee sport for the University of Denver, continues to look vulnerable with the loss of former Summit League member school Western Illinois to the Ohio Valley Conference. Jeff Colpack of The Mitchell Republic cited the outlook as ‘bleak’ to replace the Leathernecks with a sixth team for the Summit League membership and an automatic qualifier for the NCAA Tournament. Ironically, Denver men’s soccer may be the spark to drive DU to seriously examine other conference options. All this while the NCAA is facing extinction as impatient power-conference members are at the precipice of a break-away as the gulf between the haves and have-nots looks irreconcilable. West Coast Conference Accepts Oregon State & Washington State for Two Seasons

As usual, we are keeping readers up to date on conference realignment and how it might affect DU. The West Coast Conference, which we’ve long touted as a better fit for the Pioneers than the Dakota-centric Summit League, has announced the addition of Oregon State University and Washington State University as affiliate members across 12 sports for a two-year term, beginning with the 2024-25 academic year. OSU and Washington State are moving football to the Mountain West for the same two-year period and will pay the league $14 million as part of the scheduling agreement.
