Part 2: The $2.8 Billion NCAA Settlement – The Impact on DU
As we discussed yesterday, two major changes are facing NCAA Division I members. First, back pay of $2.8 billion to former student-athletes to be paid over 10 years. Second, the remaining Power Four conferences have agreed to pay all their athletes going forward and begin ‘revenue sharing’. Denver Misses Out as WCC Adds Grand Canyon and Seattle University
Last week, the West Coast Conference (WCC) announced the addition of Grand Canyon and Seattle University. The universities are leaving their current home, the West Athletic Conference (WAC), to assume full membership in 2025. The two moves bypass the University of Denver. However, this is likely not the last expansion move for the WCC. Conference insiders have said that the conference will eventually stand at 12-14 full-time members. Northwestern Routs Denver, 17-4
Denver women’s lacrosse (16-4, 5-0) faced #1 seed Northwestern, an eight-time national champion, in Evanston, Illinois Sunday afternoon. It wasn’t pretty. The Wildcats were +10 on draw control in the first half while burying eight goals on eight shots in the first quarter to take an 8-1 lead and coasted to a 17-4 win over Denver. Denver Fells Stanford 13-12, #1 Northwestern Next
Denver women’s lacrosse (16-3, 5-0) traveled to Evanston, Illinois for the first round of the NCAA tournament. The Pioneers faced the Stanford Cardinal (13-5, PAC-12 7-0) on a blustery afternoon. DU fielded their full contingent with Defender of the Year/All-American Sam Thacker and Lauren Black back in the lineup for Denver. DU’s Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse NCAA Tournament Matchups Set
It was likely that DU men’s (11-3, 5-1) lacrosse would play at home but a mystery if Denver women’s (15-3, 5-0) lacrosse team would be home or have to go on the road for the first round of the NCAA Tournament. DU Women’s Lacrosse Storms into BIG EAST Tournament Final with 19-7 Win Over Villanova
#10 ranked and top BIG EAST Tournament seed University of Denver women’s lacrosse (14-3, 6-0) played the fourth-seeded Villanova Wildcats at Xavier Thursday in a BIG EAST semifinal game. #1 seed DU has never lost to the Wildcats (12-0) and Thursday was no exception as Denver trouced Villanova 19-7. Road To Nationals Ends In Berkeley for DU Gymnastics
Denver fell to Cal and Stanford in gymnastics’ sweet 16 and doesn’t advance to Nationals. Although DU didn’t have to count a miss, you can’t fall four times and hope to make up enough tenths to advance. They join Kentucky as the biggest losers of the regionals weekend; these two teams were the only two teams ranked in the top 8 that didn’t advance to the National Championship.
