Pete’s University Park Cafe to Shutter in November
Westword aptly named it a “Greek greasy-spoon go-to” at DU’s most recognizable intersection – University and Evans. Tired and ready for a facelift, Pete’s Cafe could not keep up with today’s restaurant demands and new economic realities. However, the memories of hangover omelets, meeting with friends, or just the family-friendly dining environment will last a lifetime for many. The current operation is a throwback to a different time when nearly everyone who went to DU spent time at Pete’s. It’s a sad, but not totally unexpected development for the space. Local Gathering Place, Bruegger’s Bagels, Abruptly Closes
Bruegger’s Bagels, located a block east of Magness Arena, has ceased operations at the southeast corner of Asbury and University. Bruegger’s was a regular morning stop for student-athletes, students, faculty, staff, and local patrons. The steam from freshly made bagels covered the windows on winter mornings, bagels were made in-store instead of a commissary, and customers streamed into the store for coffee, bagels, and conversation. The store operated for more than a dozen years at the location and was the last remaining Bruegger’s in the state of Colorado. DU Inches Up in US News Rankings for Second Consecutive Year
For the second year in a row, the University of Denver moved up in the US News & World Report National Universities rankings, which were released today, to #117. Denver’s 2026 ranking moved up from a recent low of #123 two years ago to #121 last year and gained another four places in this year’s edition.
Two universities in Colorado made the Top 100. For the second year in a row, the engineering-focused Colorado School of Mines is the highest-ranked Colorado university at #80, a four-spot drop from a year ago. The University of Colorado Boulder moved up one spot to #97 to remain in the Top 100. DU, however, trailed both at #117, despite its four-spot rise. Colorado State University finished #151. Colorado College was ranked #30 among National Liberal Arts Colleges. (Colorado College officially withdrew from the U.S. News & World Report rankings in February 2023, citing concerns about the methodology and fairness, but reentered this year.) Universities Brace for Title IX Lawsuits
According to numerous sources, colleges and universities are conducting risk assessments and budgeting accordingly, anticipating lawsuits over Title IX legislation. As the Power Four conferences look to profit-share up to $20 million with student-athletes, they have a difficult and potentially costly decision to make. Either equitably split the revenue spoils with their male and female athletes or allocate the money to revenue-producing sports (or a mix of the two options). The same goes for in-house generated NIL (Name, Image & Likeness) funds.
Lawsuits are sure to follow. Continue reading Universities Brace for Title IX Lawsuits
What Are the Top Division I Men’s Hockey Programs of the Last 25 Years (and All Time)?
As we prepare to start another college hockey season in just a few weeks, we are also entering a new, unprecedented era as former Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Major Junior players are eligible to play in the NCAA for the first time since the early 1980s. This new era also gets underway after we awarded our third first-time Division I national champion – Western Michigan – since 2021. The other two champions in that span were Denver in 2022 and 2024, when they won their 9th and record 10th championships, respectively, which presents an interesting dichotomy, a sort of success split between the historical blue bloods and new powers in the sport. Denver’s NCAA Path Narrows with 2-0 Loss to Creighton
Head men’s soccer coach Jamie Franks has never veered from his ambition to achieve a national championship. One of his keys is a challenging non-conference schedule. A 2-0 loss to Creighton last week dropped the team to a 2-3 record and likely eliminated the option of an at-large NCAA bid, leaving the Pioneers hanging by a Summit League tournament thread. DU Hockey’s Depth Chart: A Preliminary Prediction
As the 2025-26 University of Denver Pioneers hockey team took to the ice at Magness Arena for its first official practice earlier this week, DU fans finally saw the 10 new freshmen in Pioneer helmets and pads for the first time. DU will be a young team again, with only three seniors, but being young has not stopped the Pioneers from strong finishes in recent years, including NCAA titles in 2022 (t-2nd youngest in Division I) and 2024 (2nd youngest). The End of Niche College Sports?
An article by Mark Novicoff in The Atlantic contends that the end of Division I college sports as we currently know them is coming. The author considers all niche, non-revenue sports outside of football and basketball as dodo birds, headed for certain extinction. We, of course, heartily disagree. Kelce Makes The Biggest Catch of Career with Swift Engagement
“I asked myself,” said Travis Kelce, “How does an aging tight end with diminished receiving skills land a billionaire?”
It took months for Kelce to develop a plan to pop the question to Taylor Swift. “Originally, I crafted a friendship bracelet with ‘Marry Me’ beads, but even Patrick (Mahomes) thought it was corny. Continue reading Kelce Makes The Biggest Catch of Career with Swift Engagement
