North Dakota President Promotes Participative Decision Making

The University of North Dakota President Mark Kennedy put together an 18 member committee to recommend $1.4 million dollars in cuts to the UND athletic department. They were asked to carve out at least 2-4 teams from their athletics department and consider a new conference affiliation. The committee convened a meeting of coaches and teams in a public forum where the various sports programs begged for their program survival. Denver held their annual Basketball Media Day (video) yesterday with a bit more than a week to go before opening tip-off. The staffs from both the Men’s and Women’s teams were present and answered the media’s questions. The Pioneers swept Western Michigan this weekend with 3-1 and 4-2 victories at Magness Arena. Denver was the dominant team for much of the weekend, but Western’s clutch defense and timely offense kept them in both games right up until the final seconds of both games. Fort Wayne Basketball Achieves Success on a Shoestring

Photo: Having one of the best Mascots in the business doesn’t hurt but Fort Wayne basketball has overcome long odds 

Fort Wayne (rebranded from IPFW) has been picked as the preseason favorite to win the 2016-17 Summit League Men’s Basketball Championship according to the annual preseason poll of league coaches, SIDs and media. The Mastodons, last year’s regular season co-champion, garnered 18-of-32 first-place votes to finish atop the poll.

Pioneers get their sixth straight win, takedown Western Michigan 4-2

The University of Denver Pioneers were able to sweep the Western Michigan Broncos on Saturday night and get their sixth win in a row. Heading into the game the Pioneers were a dismal 4-for-36 (11.1) on the power play so they weren’t looking to play a ‘special team game’. But it would turn into a special team game as the officials called a total of 17 penalties. Their fortunes would change as the Pioneers would end up going 3-for-9 on the power play in this one, and that’d be the story of the game. DU Men Battle Pesky Omaha to 0-0 Draw

The University of Denver men’s soccer team (14-0-3, 5-0-1) traveled to the University of Nebraska-Omaha’s  (8-4-4, 4-0-1) Caniglia Field in a match of Summit League unbeatens. With a beautiful afternoon in the 70’s, a homecoming crowd of 1,025, and Omaha’s Senior Day it was a perfect setting for a home team victory.  But it was not to be for a confident, pressing UNO team that out-shot the Pioneers, 18-14.
