Their coach, Jason Mims, has not been afraid to tell anyone who will listen that he wants to unseat Denver as the Summit League soccer power.  Continue reading UNO Prepares for their Superbowl

UNO’s Henningson Memorial Campanile Faces Seismic Changes

Photo: Studies from the US Geologic Service will result in changes which will  drastically change the University of Nebraska-Omaha landscape. This illustration, released by the University, shows an alternative use for the shortened structure.

As DU’s men’s soccer team travels to Omaha next weekend to battle the Mavs  for the regular season Summit League title, it might be wise to keep an eye out for falling debris.

A newly released study calls for a major change to the UNO campus – namely, the iconic Henningson Memorial Campanile. Since its completion in 1989, the Henningson Memorial Campanile, a large tower, on the University of Nebraska Omaha (UNO) campus has been featured prominently in everything from commencement programs to UNO’s centennial celebration. In Omaha, the campanile, also known as the “bell tower,” is a recognized area landmark.  Continue reading UNO’s Henningson Memorial Campanile Faces Seismic Changes

Time to Renew Vows with the Summit League

We all know by now that the Big 12 is not expanding. BYU is not going anywhere. It was unlikely anyway that the Cougars would have moved all their sports programs from the West Coast Conference to the Big 12 anyway for a number of reasons.

The dominoes did not fall. The Big 12 is standing pat and so is DU’s primary athletic conference. Continue reading Time to Renew Vows with the Summit League

Shinyashiki’s OT Goal Extends Denver’s Unbeaten Streak to 32

Striking in extra time, sophomore forward Andre Shinyashiki secured the 2-1 victory for the University of Denver men’s soccer team over New Mexico. The win extended the Pioneers’ regular season unbeaten streak to 32 consecutive games and a current record of 13-0-2.

Recently No. 3-ranked by College Soccer News, Denver continued to assert its success on the national platform. With eight seconds remaining in the second overtime, redshirt-senior midfielder Karsten Hanlin sent a corner kick into the box. The cross was headed by a New Mexico defender and redirected by Shinyashiki to net the game-winner.

Denver was the first to get on the scoreboard following a scoreless first half. Hanlin struck a one-timer past New Mexico’s goalie off of a cross sent by sophomore Kenny Akamatsu from the right flank. Hanlin’s delayed run behind Shinyashiki timed the cross precisely to create the conversion during the 52nd minute.

With one minute remaining in regulation, New Mexico’s Nicholas Rochowski equalized the score. A shot taken by New Mexico outside of the penalty area created chaos in front of net leaving a loose ball open for Rochowski to finish, sending the game to extra time.

Denver returns to Summit League play on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. The Pioneers host Oral Roberts.
