USA Reaches Championship Final with Win Over Czechia, 4-1

Head Coach David Carle has guided the USA to the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship finals for the second season in a row. The USA faced Czechia in a Saturday night semifinal for a ticket to the championship title game against Finland. Cale Ashcroft Stuns Maine In Final 20 Seconds to Lift Pioneers over Black Bears

Cale Ashcroft may not score many goals – just three so far this season – but when he does, you can bet they’re important. With just 20 seconds remaining in a tight, nationally televised nonconference matchup between the #6 Denver Pioneers (15-4-0, 4-4-0 NCHC) and #7 Maine Black Bears (12-4-2, 5-2-2 HE), Ashcroft sent a seeing-eye shot through a maze of Maine skaters, past a helpless Albin Boija, and into the back of the net to break a 1-1 deadlock. The shot silenced a raucous Alfond Arena crowd and lifted the Pioneers to a 2-1 road victory. While one win, even against a team as elite as Maine, cannot rinse all of the bad taste from last weekend’s exhibition disaster from our collective mouths, this game certainly went a long way to getting the season back on track. South Dakota State Steamrolls DU, 91-70, to Begin Summit League Play

DU opened conference play against South Dakota State, defending Summit League champions. The first half was a disaster as the Pioneers were ineffective on both ends of the floor and trailed by 27 at halftime. The second half was much better for Denver, narrowing the deficit to 12 points, but Denver faded again in the final ten minutes. OTTAWA — For the true hockey fan, there is nothing like attending the World Junior Hockey Championships.  Oh sure, there are some better ice hockey tournaments to attend, such as the Winter Olympics, where the very best players in the world face each other (when the NHL allows it), the Stanley Cup playoffs, where the very best NHL teams face off and of course, for us Pioneer fans, the NCAA Frozen Four, where the top college teams grapple for national glory.
