It’s still too early to panic about DU Hockey

It’s October 12th.

Indeed, #10 Denver is 0-2 and looked quite lackluster in their two losses to #19 Ohio State (3-2) and #6 Boston College (3-1).

But it’s October 12th. Continue reading It’s still too early to panic about DU Hockey

Puck Swami: DU Hockey Attendance Needs Help

In October of 2010, Defending NCAA Champion Boston College came out to Denver to kick-off the DU hockey season with a weekend series. Capacity crowds of over 6,000 people jammed Denver’s Magness Arena on both Friday and Saturday nights. DU was swept in that series, but the DU crowds were rabid and engaged. It felt like playoff hockey.

Fast forward six years to October, 2016 – another opening DU weekend. Fifth-ranked Boston College, coming off a 2016 Frozen Four appearance, and Ohio State, a big sports name brand, were in town to face the Pios for the Icebreaker Tournament, with Denver also coming off its best season in 10 years with its own Frozen Four appearance and sporting a top three national ranking. Denver’s late barrage against Boston College comes up short, starts season 0-2

Last night, it was the lack of shots that doomed the #3 University of Denver Pioneers against Ohio State. Tonight, the Pioneers had more than their fair share of shots on goal against the #5 Boston College Eagles, but just one of them found twine as the Eagles skated away from Magness Arena with a 3-1 victory. 15-6. The 3rd-ranked University of Denver Pioneers were outshot 15-6 in the 2nd period against the unranked Ohio State Buckeyes in the second game of the Ice Breaker Tournament. For a team that has aspirations of returning to the Frozen Four for a second straight year, the Pioneers can’t make a habit out of getting outshot like that in any period. With about a month left until the puck drops on the 2016-17 college hockey season, anticipation is starting to build, teams are starting to round into form, and apparently three weeks ago was the right time to issue the preseason top 10 (looking at you, Bucci). While the official team previews are still being worked on and kicked around, it’s about time to start looking at the upcoming season and how the 2016-17 University of Denver Pioneers are going to look.
