Denver Can’t Overcome Sloppy Play, Loses to Penn State

For the first time since losing to Ohio State last year, a span of 20 games, the No. 1 University of Denver Pioneers lost a lacrosse game. This time, the Pioneers were dispatched at the hands of the unranked, upstart Penn State Nittany Lions by a score of 15-10 at the Patriot Cup in Dallas, Texas. When it comes to men’s basketball, what does the University of Denver have? A middling basketball program in a middling conference (Summit League) at an excellent university and very good facilities in an extraordinary city. Some contend that there is a low level of interest in college basketball in Denver while others argue that there is pent-up demand for a strong college basketball program. DU has no regular history of excellence in basketball. If you follow online student forums, DU is seen as an elite snobby university by many urban students and community members who see DU as aspiring to be ‘ivy league’, a rich kid school, and stocked by white suburban kids. Ain’t playoff hockey great? We’ve had two weeks of it already and there is more coming this weekend in Albany, NY; Worcester, MA; Cincinnati, OH; and St. Paul, MN. Of course, the regional the matters most to us here at LetsGoDU is the West region in St. Paul where the No. 7 University of Denver Pioneers will face the No. 12 Boston University Terriers on Saturday.
