WATCH: Jim Montgomery talks cooling off the Sun Devils

The #3 University of Denver Pioneers didn’t come out playing head coach Jim Montgomery’s preferred style of relentless Pioneer hockey against the Arizona State Sun Devils last night. But they overcame their poor start and early 1-0 deficit to skate ASU out of the building and win 5-1.

Montgomery, always one to give a good quote, talked about his team’s performance last night and how pleased he was with his team’s response in the 2nd and 3rd periods.

Watch his postgame media scrum below:

The Pioneers and Sun Devils hit the ice again tonight at Magness Arena. The Pioneers will honor American Hero Troy Terry during the game for his incredible performance at the World Junior Championship. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 PM.

In case you missed it while you were at work like I was, Highlands Ranch native and sophomore DU forward Troy Terry made the internet explode a little while ago with this shootout heroics during the United States’ World Junior Championship Semifinal game against Russia.

Team USA and Russia played a close game through regulation and overtime and they came out of overtime tied at 3. Through the first five rounds of the shootout, the teams were tied at 2, thanks to goals from Terry and Jeremy Bracco. For the final two rounds, USA (and SCSU) coach Bob Motzko tabbed Terry to go win the game for the Americans.

And boy, did he ever:

The best part of the entire thing was the reaction from all over social media:

And then there’s this gem from Terry, himself to put a cap on the whole event:

Team USA’s journey isn’t over yet thanks to Terry. The United States will play in tomorrow’s WJC Gold Medal game against the winner of this evening’s Canada-Sweden game. It will be televised on NHL Network. Even before his heroics today, Terry had been having a great tournament with 3G-3A-6P for Team USA. You won’t want to miss his last game with Team USA before he returns to Denver this weekend.

Puck Swami: Is the men’s soccer team making the 2016 College Cup DU’s greatest sporting achievement?

When Denver centerback  Kortne Ford (above/Photo by David Grooms) carved open the Clemson backline to convert Alex Underwood’s cross to score the game-winning goal in Dec.2’s NCAA Soccer Quarterfinal with a minute left in the game to book a first-ever DU berth in the College Cup, it set off a big celebration for every Pioneer fan.

I would argue that it may have been one of DU’s greatest collegiate sporting achievements of all time.  Here’s why: Continue reading Puck Swami: Is the men’s soccer team making the 2016 College Cup DU’s greatest sporting achievement?

Puck Swami: Updated Thoughts on the DU-CC Gold Pan Rivalry

Puck Swami, the Internet moniker of a longtime DU fan, offered this as a two-part article last year on the DU-CC Gold Pan rivalry. The first part focuses some perspective on the ice and develops the history of the rivalry. The second part focuses on some of the off-ice elements of the rivalry and puts the weekend into a larger context. (Editors Note: This is republished from last season, condensed to a single article, and revised to reflect the teams’ current performance and records) Continue reading Puck Swami: Updated Thoughts on the DU-CC Gold Pan Rivalry

The Finnish Touch

The best don’t become the best by luck. Success is achieved through repetition and exertion. The University of Denver Pioneers freshman forward Henrik Borgström embodies that through his dedication and persistence. After waiting 30 minutes after practice to speak with Borgström, his lethal work ethic became apparent as the Florida Panthers first-round pick was the last to leave the ice. He’s frequently the last off the ice during pre-game warmups as well. Continue reading The Finnish Touch
