Pios run winning streak to 7 with late goal

It took an 87th-minute goal from Blake Elder to keep the #8 University of Denver Pioneers’ winning streak alive. While it appeared DU and the University of North Florida Ospreys might end the game deadlocked at 0, the Pioneers found a way to end the game in regulation.

The goal was Elder’s third on the young season and sixth of his career as a Pioneer. The Pioneers’ star Brazilian, Andre Shinyashiki offered an excellent cross to Elder and made the finish about as easy as it could possibly be.

Of course, tonight’s victory was a nice preview of what’s ahead on Wednesday when DU travels to Omaha to take on a very talented #14 Creighton team. While expectations for the Blue Jays were quite high coming into the season, Nebraska-Omaha, DU’s Summit League rival, managed to earn a draw with their crosstown rivals.

Regardless of whether Creighton plays to its preseason potential next week, you can be sure that Denver will arrive in Omaha ready to take Creighton down and run their season unbeaten streak to 8.

  1. Pio’s defense was #20 nationally and offense #31 statistically through games of Sept 15. Creighton will be the highest-ranked team DU has played this year, and getting a result in Omaha won’t be easy, as the Bluejays have been drawing an average of 3,600 fans per game this year, which is likely among the national leaders in fan support.
