Reports: Jim Montgomery to the Dallas Stars

RDS in Canada is reporting that Jim Montgomery will be joining the Dallas stars as their next head coach. Several weeks ago we reported in a LetGoDU article, Chasing Monty,  the interest in Montgomery by both the New York Rangers and the Dallas Stars. Interest continued to heat up over the past week as numerous blogs reported a growing interest in Montgomery by both clubs. Apparently, the deal from the Dallas Stars came together over the last 24 hours and will be announced shortly.

Over the past five years, Montgomery guided the Pioneers to a 125–57–26, highlighted by a National Championship the 2016-2017 season.

Jim Montgomery will succeed Ken Hitchcock who announced his retirement once the season for the Stars was completed.

Once the deal is finalized and announced, LetsGoDU will provide further details.

  1. You must not understand the mutual respect Gwoz and Killer have for each other. Ego’s aside, It’s Killer’s turn now and Gwoz understand this and is the perfect compliment to his staff.

I think Killer offers the assistant job to Carle but he declines, thus mannino or arnold take the second assistant job.

      1. someone said on here or in another thread that she’s still an advisor or something

      2. I heard from reliable sources that she will continue to advise the athletic department for a period of time.

  2. Miller would be a bad choice. All he has ever coached is goalie and defense players. Even when that style wins games it’s booooring..

Monty’s up tempo style would vanish.

  3. Miller’s daughter is playing soccer for Bowling Green next season, so the Millers are likely leaving Colorado and are headed for Ohio full time.

I don’t think DU is going to reach back in time to the Gwozdecky/Miller/Appert era for its next coach. Those guys all had their time in the sun here, won a lot of games, and returned the DU program to elite status. But I believe that ship has already sailed, and I don’t see it coming back to to a DU port anytime soon.

As I’ve said, this DU job is a top 5 college job. Pay is great, school has great tradition, recruiting areas. facilities, resources and athletic leadership. The Denver Metro area is very attractive, no long bus rides, and is very low pressure environment compared to other top 5 jobs. Selling DU is not a hard sell to most recruits, either.

      1. Dineen is likely making about $500k as the top assistant in Chicago. DU head coach pay package is also in that ballpark.

If you can coach in the NHL, you can coach in college. He’d need a couple of good assistants to help recruiting, but lot of top players would want to play for a guy who has been playing and coaching in the NHL for 30 years….

    1. Dear Ron & Kreech,

      Killer Head Coach
      Gwoz Assistant Coach
Mannino or Grant Arnold Assistant Coach

      You’re welcome Pio faithful.

      1. Gwoz as an assistant? In NCAA? LOL…you must not have a proper understanding of that man’s ego…

  4. While David Carle is young, if McMillan and Howe fall behind him and Ron supports thim – that is enough for me. I like our current playing style and we could, potentially, have a long term coach leading our program. Sometimes the best option is right in front of you.

  5. I do like the idea of Dineen on some levels. He certainly has the advantage of being an alum. He also has the very best connections to the NHL. However, unless I’m mistaken, he has had nothing to do with college hockey since he played at DU 35 years ago. Whereas someone like Greg Brown has had everything to do with college hockey for the last 13 years of his life.

I’d love to see Mannino back on the DU bench at some point. Right now, we have a former CC goalie on our bench. I’m sure Howe is a fine coach. However, Mannino = upgrade. 🙂

  6. seems like all of the DU athletics department sycophants and mcneil brownnosers who run this blog keep pushing carle so they are probably being told to promote that narrative by the administration, meaning it’s most likely a done deal already that carle is taking over…

    1. Whatever Brandon McNeil did to you and your family must have been horrible. Maybe some waterboarding was involved. But it’s time to forgive, because you are sounding like a very strange person, indeed.

      1. I thought the whole point of having a comments section was to be able to post opinions. Why can’t someone dislike MacNeill? Maybe you are the strange one for suggesting to not post or sensor comments!

  7. anyone think angelo ricci would be an option? at least as an assistant? he’s done a good job with the thunderbirds

    1. no way for head, maybe for assistant – good to have the local feeding system connection for sure, especially since more and more CO kids are playing college hockey

  8. Monty led us to a national title, can’t complain with that. Wish him best of luck. Pios need a solid hire, will be interesting to see how Kreech handles the situation.

    1. Peg’s last day was Monday. She’s enjoying her wine and book clubs already, pumpkin.

  11. I have complete faith in the DU administration to find the best coach possible to replace Monty. Look no further than the current stable of coaches at DU–extremely impressive group overall.

  12. Peg along with Ron will deliver another good one.
From what I”ve read Brown appears to be an excellent fit.
    We shall see.

  18. At 31 Alaska(F)’s new coach is the youngest in Division I. Carle at 28 turned down Alaska(A).

  22. What would we do without your factoids Viz? Thanks for repeating what has already been posted!

  23. My experience with Brandon McNeil is that he has a huge ego that out strips his intellect, cares only about big donors, is unimaginative in promoting ticket sales and has done nothing to improve the game experience for the fans. Even his own employees do not like him. DU will end up with lots of big donor money and no one in the stands.

  24. I would like to announce that I — aka mr Anonymous— have thrown my hat into the search; Stay tuned.

    1. that’s just how things work – you don’t like it, move to china, commie!! #maga

  27. I have a reak problem with Monty’s departure after five years. I firmly believe that he never had any intentions of making the DU coaching job a long-term commitment. This job was merely a stepping stone to a coaching job in the NHL. He made that quite evident when he interviewed at the end of last season with the Florida Panthers. How is his behavior any different from players who leave at the end of one or two years? Since he had a clause in this contract that he could get out of his contract if he were offered a NHL coaching position, you would have to think that Peg and Ron knew he had no intentions of staying at DU for any long period of time. Perhaps that grass may not be greener.

    1. Only four college coaches have been able to make the move to the NHL A number of college coaches may dream of the possibility but it is highly unlikely. I think he gave us a lot in 5 years and in a strange way his departure gives DU hockey even more credibility and prestige. He also got to increase his income 5X. Hard to pass that up with a young family. (And no state income tax in TX.)

    2. they got a natty and multiple nchc titles out of him in 5 years so i’m fine with it, as are most fans i’d think

    3. Very few coaches would turn down an NHL head coaching job, and rightly so – it is the very top of the profession.

We should all be very happy for Monty – he worked his ass off to get DU to the top of the college game and he was rewarded for that effort. We should all be so lucky to be in the top 30 people In our chosen profession, especially to be paid multi-millions for what you do…

  28. Hey anon 6:31
So a college coach should turn down an offer to coach an N.H.L team.
Whatever you’re smoking or drinking quit ..

  29. Stick a fork in St Cloud’s program. I can’t believe they hired Brett Larson and his lack of NHL experience!

    1. St. Cloud is in a different place recruiting wise than DU is – the core of the team comes from hockey-rich Minnesota, where there are plenty of D-I players to choose from. Secondly, the SCSU academic standards are lower and that opens the door to even more players in the pool to choose from, so filling a comapetitve roster is easier.

DU has to be very strong in Western Canada, and that’s where the NHL connections open doors and keeps DU competitve. Without Western Canada, DU would be average at best.

  31. I am going to delete anonymous tweets if they are making unfounded personal attacks. Provide you name and facts or this gets deleted. Not funny or appropriate.

  32. Greg Cronin could be an interesting name who might have interest. Associate coach for the Islanders, assistant for the Maple Leafs, coaches at Northeastern (a somewhat similar school to DU) and has a connection to Colorado as he was an assistant at CC.

  33. havent had an alum as HC in forever – it’s time. carle or dineen, only two candidates really.

    1. there’s actually never been an alumnus serve as head coach so, yeah, probably time to change that!

      1. would rather have the best coach than someone who’s an alum; if everything else is a tie, sure, give it to the alum but that should never be a primary factor

  34. Hey anon 6:31

  35. I personally think that Monty should kind of just shut up about who his successor is. Leaving the program after just five years, and trying to shove his personal preference for a successor down DU’s throat, is NOT a good look.

  36. would be cool to have three alums coaching the school’s top 3 sports when tierney retires and brown takes over; billups doing good things with bball, carle can do the same for hockey

    1. not sure hoops is no. 3 – skiing has had way more success and soccer/gymnastics are more popular at the moment

    2. BBall has never been shit at DU. That program is, and has always been, like 7th rate. My trumpet recital at Lamont when I was a kid had more attendance than a DU hoops game.

      1. Expect a few more changes under Billups before the season starts – I think you might like the product better. And, actually, Joe Scott had several 20 win seasons that were better than your trumpet recital – and better attended.
