#7 Denver battled #1 Oklahoma in front of a record Denver gymnastics crowd of 6,100 spectators but fell 197.7 to 197.4 against the Sooners Sunday afternoon. The score was Denver’s fourth highest score in program history.
The highlight of the afternoon was provided by DU sophomore Lynnzee Brown in the floor exercise. As DU’s sixth competitor in the final rotation, Brown put on an explosive routine and received a standing ovation and perfect tens from the trio of judges.

To the best of our knowledge, Nina Mcgee was the last DU gymnast to record a perfect ten on the floor exercise.
In the all-around, DU’s junior Maddie Kerr topped the field (39.650 points) followed by two other Denver gymnasts, Lynnzee Brown and freshman Alexandria Ruiz.
DU returns to action at Hamilton Gym next Saturday against Illinois State – already sold out.
First of all, congrats to the Pios for giving the top-ranked Sooners all they could handle. Scoring in the 197’s all season will keep the Pios in the hunt for top 5 in the country, and as the only private school at that level, it would certainly be special to finish there.
More importantly, a sellout of 6,000+ for a gymnastics meet is a first in DU history. This program has essentially outgrown Hamilton gym now, and DU needs to continue putting all home meets at Magness on winter Sunday afternoons. The next step in those crowds is not just drawing little gymnastics girls and their families, but adding more students and sports fans. Beating name brand schools is the best way to do it, and having athletes who can score 10.0s is special.
What an incredible thing for a small school like DU to draw over 6000 fans for a traditionally “secondary” sport. Fantastic work by the program to build it to this level. They should be very proud of what they have and proud that they are able to compete with the best. Keep up the good work and continue to build it!
They have done a great job building support. Plus, it never hurts when two top 10 teams clash. Also, DU is one of the few ‘private schools’ that can compete at this level.
