South Broadway Makeover for Local Landmark

It looks like a space station or a giant broken egg. It’s also a historic landmark. If you have driven south on Broadway at Old Hampden, you will see the Charles Deaton-designed ovoid Community Banks building at 3501 S. Broadway.

Deaton also designed the famed Woody Allen’s “Sleeper House” along Interstate 70 west of Denver.

The 52 year-old structure is getting a much needed facelift, inside and out. Workers have been sealing cracks, breaking away loose cement and scraping the uneven shell preparing it for a white, high-tech polyurethane sealant to be applied over the exterior. A spokesman advised LetsGoDU that the work will include new windows and the interior is getting an update, too. Exterior work should be completed some time this December.

Prep work will be completed on the exterior next week, before the finishing coat is applied.

The Englewood Community Banks building is on  the National Register of Historic Places.

The unique structure adds to the character of South Broadway and is in stark contrast to many of the colored box condos going up around Denver these days. If you get a chance, drive by and give it a look.
