Why We Watch NCHC TV but Listen to Jay Stickney

With the recent retirement of legendary hockey broadcaster Mike ‘Doc’ Emrick, Jay Stickney has emerged as a leading national hockey voice – or at least a LetsGoDU favorite. Broadcasting the Thursday afternoon game between Miami and Denver at the Omaha pod from room #4288 at Magness Arena,  Stickney brought the game to cars and homes around Pioneer nation.

We captured a few choice quotes from Jay during the Denver-Miami game.

On Miami’s Matthew Barbolini – “One of my new favorite hockey names – surprisingly, out of New York.”

On Denver broadcasting peer Sandy Clough’s college – “St. Lawrence is best known as his (Sandy’s) alma mater. A great seven-and-a-half years he spent there getting his ceramics major.”

On scoring an easy tap-in goal to make it 3-1, DU – “Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to Brett Stapley.”

On Miami’s Hampus Rydqvist – “I love Rydqvist but I’m going with Hampus. Sounds like he should be a base guitar player for AC/DC — Yes, I know that Angus is from Australia”

Again on Hampus Rydqvist – “Big Swede on Hampus…I mean campus. This joke provided by John Boos (DU’s Director of Corporate Sponsorships). All complaints and inquiries should go to John Boos.”

Coming out of break – “13:32 to go in the period. That’s bad luck in some cultures.”

*During a lull in the action – “Pretty sure (Miami defenseman) Rourke Russell won the Gong Show.”

Faceoff puck drop delay– “The linesman waiting for the perfect time in the universe to drop the puck.”

Heading to period break – “Back to the studio for the talented and wildly underrated Justin Linn.”

On a penalty call – “You hate to call it a freshman mistake but look in the penalty box – a freshman.”

On Denver’s fourth goal in the empty Omaha pod – “Fans here going crazy. Free parking.”

Hampus, yet again – “(Miami’s) Ludvig Persson is also out of Sweden. He is not the big man on Hampus.”

On DU’s freshman forward McCade Webster – “I’m going to call him Sherriff McCade.”

Expert analysis – “They (Miami) are 1 for 20 on the powerplay. That’s not good.”

Technical difficulties – “We got the audio back from Omaha. Probably had to pull a few hundred wires to make it happen.”

On the upcoming Saturday morning game for Denver – “Saturday 10:30 am MT pregame breakfast at Omaha – please provide your own strawberries and cream. Wait, I think in Omaha you have steak and eggs.”

A fan of The Onion, Mariah Carey, all sports and pop culture, there are few topics that Stickney is unwilling to tackle. And there are few things more enjoyable than listening to a Jay Stickney broadcast. The games are never boring or too serious with the knowledgeable and quick-witted Jay Stickney at the mike. We are truly fortunate to have him calling Denver hockey.

*Editors Note: Luckily, Jay did not use the cheap and easy reference of Dirk Diggler from Boogie Nights.

  1. Dunker loves Jay. It’s almost a certainty he will be in the DU Athletic Hall of Fame. I’d like to be his agent. He could be Larry’s new neighbor on Curb Your Enthusiasm. Larry would be amused that Jay, a billionaire through inheritance, flies to Denver every weekend to broadcast DU hockey games.

    1. I think he already has a key to the executive wash room in Williams Tower. Heck, the steeple would be copper instead of gold if we didn’t have Jay!
