Oregon State Earns Academy Award in 2-1 Win

#11 University of Denver men’s soccer (4-2-2) fell to Oregon State (3-2-1) Tuesday night at Pioneer Field. The game was scoreless late in the first half when DU’s Lucas Russo was given a red card (40:32) when responding to an Oregon State tackle by Mouhameth Thiam. Russo flicked his arm at Mouhameth but Dante Williams who walked in between the two players fell to the ground in a drama-worthy moment that led to the Russo ejection. The half ended in 0-0 draw as DU seemed to respond positively with only ten players.

Their football team practices the same move:

Denver actually took the lead in the second half, 1-0, when Ronan Wynne lofted a beautiful feed from the right flank and Oje Ofunrein headed the perfect pass into the goal (50:21). At that point, the momentum began to swing back to the Beavers.

Short-handed Denver fell back into their own end over the final 40 minutes with the 1-0 advantage and the Beavers countered with two beautiful goals from distance by Javier Armas at 67:23 and 79:48.  The Pioneers rallied in the final minutes of the match as the ball caromed around the Beaver goal box but DU could not find the back of the net.

Oregon State outshot the outmanned Pioneers 10-5 and led in shots-on-goal 5-2. Overall, a disappointing end to a promising non-conference schedule which concluded with two losses and a tie. Next up is a critical conference match against Oral Roberts at 7:00 pm MT Saturday at Pioneer Field.

  1. Soccer is really only comprised of two tasks – scoring goals and keeping the other team from scoring goals. Lately, the Pioneers have not been doing enough of either…

Let’s see if they can right the ship…
