DU Women’s Teams Complete Bumpy Weekend

The DU men’s soccer team is in the midst of a rare 10-day break and enjoyed a well-deserved weekend of rest. However, three women’s teams were in action.

Women’s soccer (7-4-1, 1-0-1) began home conference matches against South Dakota and South Dakota State. Women’s soccer opened up conference play at Kansas City with a 3-1 win Thursday and opened at home Sunday afternoon at Pioneer Field. And Women’s Triathlon competed in TCU’s Battle in the Fort Sunday morning.

DU Volleyball, once one of Denver’s premier women’s sports, continues to struggle and search for consistency. Serving, setting, and defense betrayed the Pioneers as they were swept by South Dakota (3-0) before falling to South Dakota State (3-1) at Hamilton Gym on Thursday and Saturday, respectively, to open conference play.  In Denver’s defense, the opponents were a combined 23-3 coming into Hamilton Gym but it has been a long time since Denver went 1-6 in back-to-back home losses.

In game one, three DU players had eight kills (Molly Mirabelli, Cassie Davis, Ava Reynolds) and Briley Decker chipped in 23 assists. In the second match, Cassie Davis had 19 kills and Briley Decker collected 40 assists. Still, Denver Volleyball has a lot of work to do during conference play to elevate its compete level and produce better results.

Volleyball dropped to 0-2 in Conference play following the loss to SDSU.

Meanwhile, five of the top six teams from last season’s Triathlon Nationals met for TCU’s Battle in the Fort. Arizona took the win and DU finished fifth. Perennial power ASU athletes finished in first and third. Arizona athletes finished in second and swept positions 5-8 to gobble up the winning points.

Denver women’s soccer, for their part, rained down a whopping 36 shots – 10 on goal – against North Dakota at Pioneer Field but somehow never found the back of the net in a scoreless draw with the Fighting Hawks. UND mustered a paltry 3 shots on target and 10 in total.

Overall, a challenging weekend for DU athletes.

Coming up this week, Volleyball makes its North Dakota swing this week against UND and NDSU while women’s soccer travels to Tulsa to face ORU next Saturday. Triathlon is off for two weeks.

Men’s soccer begins conference action at home Wednesday night (6 pm) against Oral Roberts before St. Thomas comes to Denver on Saturday (1 pm).

The Hockey team, ready to defend its 10th title, finally opens its season in Anchorage against Alaska-Anchorage on Saturday and Sunday. Both games, which start at 8 pm and 7 pm, respectively, will be streamed on the UAA Athletics YouTube page.
