Men’s Soccer Drops Two Games, Women’s Teams Sweep at Home

It was not a complete surprise when DU men’s soccer (7-2-4, 2-1) traveled to #3 Pitt and fell 1-0 to the Panthers, spoiling DU’s undefeated record. Saturday’s loss at UMKC, however, was inexplicable. Women’s soccer and volleyball, meanwhile enjoyed home game sweeps and win respectively.

Following the Pittsburgh loss, DU Men’s Soccer traveled to Kansas City Saturday night for a Summit League matchup against the Roos. UMKC  shut down DU’s wings, put DU’s forwards backs to the KC goal, and controlled the pace of play. In the 13th minute, the Roos’ Elie Kisoka scored the game-winner as Denver failed to mount a serious offensive comeback. Denver faces conference rival Omaha at Pioneer Field Wednesday night to see if they can regain their footing.

DU Women’s soccer (9-5-1, 3-1-1) faced St. Thomas and South Dakota State University in a pair of home matches. Despite the comfortable 3-1 margin over St. Thomas Thursday night, the game was in doubt most of the match. Hannah Tate and Ella Frost staked Denver to a 2-1 lead but it took some great saves by keeper Molly Wissman to hold the lead on the Tommies. With six minutes remaining, Michaela McGowan scored to give Denver some breathing room, 3-1. Denver seemed to own NDSU on Senior day, outshooting the Bison 19(6)- 11(4). DU trailed 1-0 in the first half but knotted the score before halftime. With the score tied 1-1 late in the match, midfielder Samantha Dreiling was pulled down in the box. A referee video review awarded Denver a PK. Ella Frost buried the kick at 80:14 and Denver defended over the final ten minutes for the 2-1 victory.

Denver volleyball (7-8, 2-3) faced St. Thomas Saturday ad fell behind two games to one. DU took the fourth set 25-17 and squeezed by the Tommies 16-14 in the extra frame. Alayna Finucan had 27 digs, Briley Decker had 54 assists and Ava Reynolds and Jamia Johnson had 16 kills each in the comeback win in front of a loud Hamilton Gym crowd.

A couple of Canucks led Denver Triathlon at the Western Regional Championships. DU’s defending national champion, Maria Carreau, finished third and Beatrice Normand finished in seventh to top the Pioneers. Denver now has a full contingent of qualifiers for the National Championships. This year’s nationals is on Saturday, Nov. 9 at Lake Louisa State Park in Clermont, Florida.

  1. With the upset loss to UMKC, DU dropped all the way to #14, and would be in danger of losing a top 16 hosting seed, which includes a first round bye in the NCAAs.
