WATCH: Jim Montgomery discusses win over North Dakota

The top-ranked Denver Pioneers topped the North Dakota Fighting Hawks 4-1 last night to earn a weekend split with their archrival. It was an important bounce-back type game for the Pios after blowing a 3-0 lead the night before. While Denver would have much preferred a sweep, especially after Friday night’s first period, DU was still able to enter Thanksgiving break on a good note.

DU head coach Jim Montgomery was pleased with his team’s performance last night. Watch his postgame media scrum below (pardon the typo in the tweet): Continue reading WATCH: Jim Montgomery discusses win over North Dakota

A night ago, the story was a lack of leadership and dedication to the process. It ended in an ugly 5-4 loss that saw the top-ranked University of Denver Pioneers blow a 3-0 lead to the #3 North Dakota Fighting Hawks. One night later, the Pioneers rebounded and used their third period dominance to send the Fighting Hawks back to the frozen hellscape of Grand Forks, North Dakota with a loss. WATCH: Jim Montgomery talks loss to North Dakota, lack of team commitment

Last night, the top-ranked Denver Pioneers lost in heartbreaking fashion to the #3 North Dakota Fighting Hawks after blowing a 3-0 lead. It was about as bad a loss as Denver has seen this year and it seems like this could be a turning point, for better or for worse, in the season.

DU head coach Jim Montgomery wasn’t happy with his team’s performance and he didn’t hold back in talking about what went wrong. Watch his postgame media scrum from last night below: Continue reading WATCH: Jim Montgomery talks loss to North Dakota, lack of team commitment

The calendar year of 2017 would simultaneously be a gratifying and trying year for Tariq Hammond. The University of Denver Pioneers defenseman helped his team claim their eighth national title over Minnesota Duluth on April 8. Unfortunately, the staple of Denver’s blueline was on the receiving end of crunching hit against the boards that snapped his ankle requiring surgery. Pioneers blow 3-0 lead, show little life after first period in 5-4 loss to North Dakota

It was about as perfect a start as the top-ranked University of Denver Pioneers could have asked for. They were skating hard, passing well, and crashing the net at every turn. As such, the Pios were dominating play at Magness Arena against the #3 North Dakota Fighting Hawks. Denver looked every bit the best team in the country and North Dakota…well they didn’t. Broadcast Team Gains National Notoriety

The hottest team in Denver (#1 Pioneer hockey (6-2-2) is paired with the hottest broadcast duo in Denver this weekend.

DU reality TV star JJ Lane is paired with his hockey broadcast partner Jay Stickney on the cover of next month’s People Magazine Rockies West edition. The pair are called, “Sexiest Men in the Booth,” – the same edition that labels Blake Shelton as the “sexiest man alive”.

People Magazine was writing a feature story on JJ Lane and his new broadcast role for DU hockey several months ago when his dynamic partner, Jay Stickney,  was ‘discovered’ by the People staff. As the season has progressed, their chemistry has been obvious to local fans at Magness Arena who began to notice wives and girlfriends with one eye on the ice and the other eye on the booth. The broadcast partners even have a nickname – “booth candy” .

JJ Lane first noticed the chemistry when they went out for a drink and Lane, a leading man on both The Bachlerette and Bachelor in Paradise, “became a wingman – for the first time ever”.

But Stickney doesn’t want his newly found fame to detract from the 8-time champions on the ice – so he is “dressing down” on game days. “I want people to know that I can call games, too.”

Jay Stickney tweet

When asked where JJ’s left hand is on the cover of People Magazine, Stickney replied, “the dump button.”
