If the #8 Denver Pioneers (12-5-1, 5-3-0 NCHC, 15 pts) ended 2021 on a high note with their 7-2 drubbing of the Alaska Fairbanks Nanooks (4-13-1, Ind.), they opened 2022 on a lower note, tying the visitors in the second game of the series at Magness Arena, 4-4. The Pioneers looked sloppy, disjointed, and out of rhythm for much of the game while the Nanooks looked energized and hungry for an upset and they very nearly got it. Cameron Wright’s Hat Trick Leads Denver’s Dismantling of Alaska to End 2021 on High Note
Covid-19. Supply chain issues. Climate change. Denver Hockey’s uncharacteristic 10-13-1 record end to the 2020-2021 season. There were so many things to forget and leave behind in 2021 and more to look forward to in 2022. But on the last day, in the last college hockey game of the year, the #8 Pioneers (12-5-0, 5-3-0 NCHC, 15 pts) put 2021 to bed the right way by topping the Alaska Fairbanks Nanooks (4-13-0, Ind.) 7-2 at Magness Arena for their 19th and final win of the calendar year. New Summit League Commissioner Josh Fenton Eyeing Alliance or Merger with NCHC?
It is strictly speculation at this point but some media outlets and social media sources are anticipating either a working arrangement or outright merger between the Summit League and the NCHC. Add the double-hatting by Fenton who is working as a consultant to the Summit League effective January 1 while finishing out the college hockey season as commissioner of the NCHC, to the reality that there is no immediate public effort to replace his role within the NCHC, this speculation is understandable. Denver Hockey Road Trip Recap: Pioneers Earn Road Split With UMD Bulldogs
If you were told on Thursday that the #11 Denver Pioneers (11-5-0, 5-3-0, 15 pts) would come home from their trip north to Duluth to take on the #5 Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs (11-6-1, 4-3-1, 14 pts) with a split, odds are, you would have been satisfied. Coming into the weekend, the Pios had won six-straight games dating back to a sweep of now-#4 Western Michigan and were on a scoring tear. Their red-hot NCAA-best offense seemingly couldn’t miss. It helped that they played Miami and Arizona State after Western but the numbers couldn’t be ignored. They looked to keep the offense going on Friday night and boy, did they… Continue reading Denver Hockey Road Trip Recap: Pioneers Earn Road Split With UMD Bulldogs
Dixie State Clobbers Denver, 82-62
Denver men’s basketball (3-9, 0-0) traveled to St. George, Utah Saturday night to play the Dixie State Trailblazers (5-5, 0-0) to conclude a brutal 6-game road trip. The same Dixie State that earned their first-ever D1 win against Denver last season. Denver’s 82-62 loss marked the Pioneers 42nd consecutive road loss, one game away from tieing their longest road-losing streak of 43 games. Continue reading Dixie State Clobbers Denver, 82-62
Bulldogs Flip Script on Pioneers to Split Weekend Series & End DU’s 7-game Winning Streak
A night after the #11 Denver Pioneers (11-5-0. 5-3-0, 15 pts) dominated the #5 Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs (11-6-1, 4-3-1, 14 pts) in a 5-0 rout for their seventh-straight victory, the Bulldogs came out and returned the favor at AMSOIL Arena in Duluth, Minnesota. UMD scored three first-period goals against a Pioneers team that looked like they didn’t quite know what hit them and it ended up being enough to keep Denver’s NCAA-best offense out of the game as the Bulldogs weathered a second-period storm from DU and won 6-2. Denver, of course, was seeking a huge road sweep tonight but, in the big picture, a road split against a team like Minnesota Duluth is still a good result.
We will have further detailed analysis in our hockey road trip weekend recap tomorrow morning.
