The Pioneers look to build on last weekend’s success when they welcome the University of Alaska-Fairbanks Nanooks this weekend
It sure was sweet watching David Carle lead the Pioneers to two consecutive wins last weekend, a fantastic start to the young head coach’s career. But as you look around the NCHC, the conference as a whole is already having some early success (of course, the exception being North Dakota). That being said, Denver can use all the confidence they can get before conference games begin. Continue reading Denver Hockey Series Preview: University of Alaska Fairbanks→

The Grand Forks Herald’s Brad Schlossman recently put together a great 3-part series on the founding of the NCHC. Some interesting insights were provided in the series including:
Peg Bradley Doppes meeting at a hotel near the Denver International Airport with North Dakota’s AD Brian Faison for the ‘Birth of the NCHC’.
Notre Dame’s involvement in the initial meetings and its verbal agreement to join the league.
The internal battle between ‘hockey invested’ schools and WCHA leadership which led to the exit.
How the league’s initial commissioner bailed four months into the job and how current commissioner Josh Fenton made the jump from Miami to NCHC.
Coaches’ concerns about the potential strength and dominance of NCHC teams.
This is Part 3 of a three-part series on how the NCHC was formed and how it got to where it is today as college hockey’s dominant conference. PART 1 can be found here. PART 2 can be found here. PART 3 can be found here.

It went fast and it was fun. Full of winning, parties and even a little snow. DU won every game, match and meet (swimming thrashed Colorado State) to make it a perfect weekend. Here are the Top 5 moments from the weekend. Continue reading A look back at Homecoming Weekend→
DENVER – If David Carle retired right now, he’d be the all-time winningest coach in college hockey history (by win-percentage of course). A night after beating in-state rival Air Force 4-1, Denver returned to Magness Arena for the first time in the 2018-19 campaign and turned in another dominant 6-0 performance against a middling WCHA team in the Alabama-Huntsville Chargers to start the season 2-0. Last night, the University of Denver Pioneers opened their season with a 4-1 victory over in-state rival Air Force. It was an important victory, not only for David Carle in his regular season head coaching debut but for a young Pioneers team with a steep hill to climb in the first half of the season. Air Force returned much of the team that upset St. Cloud State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament a year ago and Denver went to Colorado Springs and clipped the Falcons’ wings. The Pioneers made a statement in their opener and will certainly be looking to keep the momentum rolling tonight against Alabama-Huntsville at Magness Arena for Homecoming and their home opener.

Welcome back Pioneers fans! After a long summer, college hockey is finally back and it couldn’t have come any sooner. There have been several questions surrounding the Denver Pioneers this offseason regarding their new leadership behind the bench and on the ice, but only time will tell how the young group transitions.

This upcoming weekend, October 12th – 14th, marks another DU Homecoming and a great chance for students, families, DU faculty and staff along with alumni to cheer on the Pioneers. The weather forecast shows cold weather clearing out Saturday and sunny weather in the 50’s on Saturday for Hocktoberfest – with rapidly falling temperatures.
Hocktoberfest will again feature live music, food and, of course, beer before the game. And, like last year there will be a complimentary scarf and Denver cup.
Just hours after being ranked the number one team in the nation by Top Drawer Soccer, the Denver Pioneers (10-1-2) fell to a very talented University of Virginia (7-1-2) side. The Pioneers were unsettled from the start and unprepared for Virginia’s size, tempo and ball control. Daryl Dike, a 6’3″ 225 skilled freshman forward from Oklahoma, put Virginia in the lead at 27:03 of the first half off a Scott Devoss deflection as Denver struggled to clear the ball from the box. Four minutes later, the Cavilers struck again on a strike off a Nathaniel Croft corner. Virginia’s Simeon Okoro buried the cross at 31:19 to give Virginia a 2-0 advantage. Denver started to move the ball into the Cavalier side of the field the final 10 minutes of the first half but were out-shot 7-0 in the first 45 minutes.
GOOAAALLL!!! Daryl Dike in the right place at the right time, his second tally of the year!
