Play was suspended due to inclement weather (rain) Wednesday afternoon with 29 golfers yet to finish at the Augusta National Women’s Amateur. DU’s Anna Zanusso finished her first round at 75 (+3) which ties her with thirteen other golfers at T32 place. The top 30 golfers who survive the two-day cut play in the finals of the Augusta National Women’s Amateur championship. She achieved par on ten holes and had two birdies and five bogies during her round on the Champions Course. Katherine Smith stands alone at -4 thru 11 holes. Weekend Update: Pioneers Rack Up Wins
Both of DU’s lacrosse teams remain undefeated in Big East play with three more wins. DU’s women’s soccer and volleyball cemented regular season Summit League Championships. Men’s and women’s tennis won their weekend tilts and DU golfers heated up courses out west during non-conference play. Gymnastics is still in play for a national championship. Sometimes we take all this for granted but Denver teams keep piling up spring wins with a combined record of 61-16-1.
Denver Golfer Zanusso Set to Make History at Augusta
In less than a week, we could be watching NBC on Saturday afternoon to see a DU golfer make the rounds at Augusta National Golf Course. It won’t be easy to make the cut of elite participants but either way, it will be a historic week for DU sophomore Anna Zanusso and the University of Denver. Monday Morning Pioneer News Dump
- While DU may not be the Harvard of the west, Denver is quickly becoming the Yale of the Rockies. DU already added lacrosse transfers Jackson Morrill and Lucas Cotler from Yale and last week, DU Hockey head coach David Carle followed in Bill Tierney’s footsteps and added grad transfer goalie Corbin Kaczperski to the roster. Kaczperski will start classes at DU in the spring which makes him eligible to begin playing for the Pios in December when the NCHC Pod begins.
- Staying with hockey, the Pioneers were picked to finish 2nd in the NCHC behind only North Dakota by media members from around the conference and country. The full preseason poll is just below:
NCAA Officially Grants Blanket Eligibility Waiver for Spring Athletes
Senior lacrosse star Ethan Walker has an extra year of eligibility. Junior women’s lacrosse star Quintin Hoch-Bullen now has two years of eligibility. Freshman women’s golf star Anna Zanusso – the same Anna Zanusso who carded an NCAA record 61 earlier this year – gets a full 4-year do-over. Yesterday, the NCAA Executive Council approved an extra year of eligibility for all spring NCAA Division I and II athletes. In the case of the University of Denver, this includes the men’s and women’s lacrosse, tennis, and golf.
As for gymnastics basketball and skiing – all three classified winter sports – will not receive special eligibility treatment under the new ruling. Continue reading NCAA Officially Grants Blanket Eligibility Waiver for Spring Athletes
And now, some good news: spring athletes to be granted extra year of eligibility, per reports
The last two days have felt like a decade. Every five minutes, the news cycle delivered a new body blow and the bad news flowed flowing like the dang Colorado River. On Wednesday afternoon, the NCAA delivered the news that fans would not be permitted to attend any winter sports championships including March Madness and the NCAA Hockey Tournament. This news, of course, was followed up by the NBA suspending its season Wednesday night after Rudy Gobert of the Utah Jazz tested positive for the coronavirus, better known to some as COVID-19. And that was just Wednesday. Continue reading And now, some good news: spring athletes to be granted extra year of eligibility, per reports
DU’s Anna Zanusso ties all-time NCAA Record for low round in golf, firing 61!
In one of the greatest individual performances by a DU athlete in the history of the university in any sport, DU freshman women’s golfer Anna Zanusso fired an NCAA record-tying 61 for a low round at the Westbrook invitational tournament in Peoria, Ariz. on Sunday, Feb. 23.
“Anna [Zanusso] was incredible today,” said DU coach Lindsay Kuhle. “She hit 18/18 greens today and made 11 birdies all of which were within 15 feet of the hole. Shooting a program and NCAA record is remarkable. I can’t even begin to explain what it was like to see 61. She was in the zone, confident and in control. Her routine was very deliberate and purposeful. I couldn’t be more proud of Z to own this record.
I see this record today standing in program history for many many years to come.”
The final putt for the record is here:

Crimson & Gold touch propels Denver to national powerhouse status

LetsGoDU friend CD Dunks reminds us that there is no need to use the term ‘mid-major’. And the same goes for ‘secondary sport’ – i.e. any sport that is not called football or Power-Five conference basketball. The big question is: Has Peg Bradley-Doppes simply built one of the finest athletic department in the land? Continue reading Crimson & Gold touch propels Denver to national powerhouse status
