DU men’s soccer (3-0-1) re-entered the Top 25 earlier in the week and traveled east to face a Top 10 side, #9/13 Maryland, and a Top 25 Side in #19/9 Georgetown. Denver emerged with a win against the University of Maryland, propelled by two first-half goals in front of 3,000+ fans. The Pios then traveled to Georgetown to complete the east coast swing, overcoming a 1-0 deficit to earn a 1-1 road draw. Head Coach Barbara Perkins was named the University of Denver’s first triathlon head coach in program history for the abbreviated 2020 season and recently completed her second full season by guiding DU Triathletes to an exciting fourth-place finish at this season’s NCAA Nationals. We asked Coach Perkins about this past season and her thoughts about the future of DU Triathlon.
Denver Earns NCAA Berth and Makes History During Wild Week
Denver men’s soccer (9-3-5, 4-1-1) had to play 220 minutes of soccer and win two nail-biting shootouts to emerge as conference Summit League Tournament champions in Macomb, Illinois. The Pioneers defeated UMKC (1-1, 4-3 PKs) and Oral Roberts (1-1, 3-2 PKs) in a hard-fought semifinal and final. The unlikely hero was back-up keeper Kobe Gray who head coach Jamie Franks inserted in both matches to defend penalties. Gray made key stops in both shootout sessions for the tournament win. Gray was named the tournament MVP in what is certainly a great trivia answer to the question: Name an NCAA conference tournament MVP who never played a minute in his team’s tournament regulation or overtime? More Tricks than Treats for Denver Teams over Halloween Weekend
Denver went 1-2-1 for Halloween weekend – a result that spooked even the hardiest of DU fans. In what was supposed to be a battle for conference titles and conference leads turned into a mixed bag of rotten caramel apples, toothbrushes, and stale Good & Plenty. It took a Halloween matinee yesterday by Denver Women’s Soccer to finally deliver a treat during the weekend homestand when they clinched their 12th conference title with a win over South Dakota State. Denver Battles for Fall Conference Titles This Week While Hockey Falters on the Road
We told you about Denver hockey team’s (4-2-0) trip out east. After two good periods, they have given up 10 goals and scored only 2 goals over the last four periods as they dropped two games to Providence College and Boston College. DU has a bye week to regroup and prepare for a road trip to North Dakota in two weeks.
Denver’s other fall teams are all fighting for regular-season titles.

Denver hockey outscored Air Force 12-1 in a two-game home-and-home sweep of Air Force, including a dominating 8-0 victory on Saturday. Denver’s top line of Carter Savoie, Cole Guttman, and Bobby Brink has racked up 26 points in 4 games, Savoie leads the NCAA points per game at 2.75. Denver Goes 4-2-1 on the Weekend
Women’s soccer (5-1) split a pair of matches. The Pios waxed Kansas State at DU soccer stadium, 3-1 Thursday evening. Denver had goals from three different players – Riley Baker, Natalie Beckman (of course) and Sydney Sharp. That makes back-to-back Power-Five wins against Utah (Pac-12 ) and Kansas State (Big 12). On Labor day, the Denver backline had a rough first half against the visiting Mustangs from Southern Methodist University (SMU), allowing three goals in a fifteen-minute span, to trail 3-0. In a strange game dominated by the Pios, Denver outshot the visitors 21-3 and 7-3 shots-on-goal (DU also had an ‘own goal) for the entire contest but Mustangs made all their shots count and won the game, 4-2.
