Denver’s newest DI sport, Triathlon, did not win the team NCAA Triathlon championship at Tempe, Arizona. The DU team finished fourth. However, a freshman, Maira Carreau, had a historic performance for the University of Denver, earning the top spot on the podium Saturday and an individual national championship for DU. Carreau has three more years of eligibility remaining and if head coach Barbara Perkins recruits and develops a few more stars, Denver will be in the hunt for their first women’s team title to add to DU’s 33 national team championships. Denver Completes Another Successful Week
DU men’s and women’s soccer teams earned 1-0 victories this week against Western Illinois and UMKC, respectively. DU women’s soccer (9-1-5) secured their win at the friendly confines of Pioneer Field while DU men (7-2-4, 3-0-1) defeated WIU in Macomb, Illinois. Women’s soccer earned a win and a tie on the road, DU volleyball split in South Dakota and DU men’s soccer earned a tie at home in conference action.
Soccer Teams Drop First Games of the Season
Both DU men’s and women’s soccer fell in the past week to Portland and Colorado, respectively. The men’s team then followed their loss with a heart-stopping draw vs. Seattle on the road Monday night. Denver Men’s and Women’s Soccer Teams Complete a Solid Week
Denver men’s (2-0-2) and women’s soccer (2-0-4) had a solid week in non-conference action. Women’s soccer started their season with four consecutive ties. Then, last week they added two consecutive wins over Northern Colorado from the Big Sky Conference on Thursday and Sunday against North Carolina State from the ACC. The 2-0 win over Northern Colorado was expected but the 4-2 win over the Wolfpack was a big boost for new women’s head coach Julianne Sitch. DU Athletes Deliver Outstanding Week of Performances
We told you about the Pioneer’s HUGE hockey road sweep of North Dakota – the program’s first sweep of UND in Grand Forks since 2010; Denver men’s soccer winning the Summit League Tournament; and, DU men’s basketball’s 2-0 start this past week. DU hockey earns a bye this week. DU soccer was awarded a Thursday home NCAA Tournament home match against San Diego while DU men’s basketball plays at Hamilton Gym tonight before traveling to the MTE New Orleans Tournament Mid-Week. Fall Sports Begin to Wind Down, DU Triathlon Set for NCAA Title Quest
Denver volleyball (16-10, 10-5) split their home matches this week. Denver sped by Oral Roberts 3-0 on Thursday but fell to UMKC 3-1 Saturday on Senior Day. Lauren Poulter had 34 assists and DU had a balanced attack to sweep the ORU Golden Eagles. On Saturday, Summit League volleyball teams honored DU’s Coach Tom Hogan with pre-match t-shirts recognizing his battle against testicular cancer. No doubt, the emotions associated with Senior Day and Tom Hogan were at the top of mind of fans and players in Hamilton Gym. UMKC played a solid match and a number of their fans traveled to Denver for additional support in the road win for the Roos. Pioneers Pile Up Victories Aside a Stunning Defeat
The sudden end of the #1 seed DU women’s soccer (11-4-4, 8-0-1) season came Sunday afternoon during the Summit League Tournament semifinals at Pioneer Field. The underdog #4 Oral Roberts Golden Eagles (10-9-2, 4-5-0) bunkered in during the game, packing the back line, failing to go on the offensive, and hoping for overtime and a shootout. After a scoreless regulation draw and extra time, the Golden Eagles got their wish and took down DU 3-2 during PK’s. Denver outshot ORU 14-3 and shots-on-goal 5-3 but the Pioneers could not find the back of the net. The final result marked a shocking end to DU’s post-season hopes after an undefeated conference regular season. #2 seed, South Dakota State fell to Omaha as the top two seeds were booted from the Summit League Tournament. Mixed Results For Denver Athletes Heading into Homecoming Week
DU Men’s soccer (7-2-5, 2-0-2) played to a frustrating 1-1 draw against Kansas City Saturday night. Three straight draws and less than one goal scored per game over their last eight games have shown yet another season where DU struggles to score goals. Denver appears to still have a solid back line, giving up occasional dangerous runs, and consistently controls the midfield. Unfortunately, the front-line players lack the creativity to finish and take the pressure off their back line. DU has two road trips (Eastern Illinois 10/29 and Lindenwood (11/2) and a finale against Western Illinois (11/5) at Pioneer Field to find some scoring magic.
