Fanning the Flames – From Tweets to Twits

It was with great interest that I watched the twitter wars and blogs covering this past weekend’s hard fought Denver – Minnesota-Duluth hockey series. Pioneer (2-0/series) fans saw the series as a poorly officiated ‘chippy’ affair. On the other hand, the UMD (0-2/series) Bulldog blogs and twitter supporters saw the series as a highly competitive physical affair and characterized DU’s team and supporters as soft, spoiled babies.

Denver Pioneers Secure Sweep Over UMD in Chippy Affair

With 7.8 seconds left and the score sitting at 2-1 in favor of the University of Denver Pioneres, three Minnesota-Duluth players, on each end of the ice, starting punching and tackling DU players. In true hockey form, DU players retaliated and the game was one punch away from a benches clearing brawl.

In the end, Denver won the game by a score of 2-1 and secured a very important sweep to put some more distance between them and the Bulldogs. Heinen Scores Twice as Denver Tops Minnesota-Duluth

For the first time since the New Year, the University of Denver couldn’t get anything going in the first period. After withstanding an early barrage by the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs in which DU starting goalie Tanner Jaillet gave up 2 goals, the Pioneers settled down and came back to win. Sleeping Over With Recruits

At the UNO game yesterday,  Dallas Walton a 6’10” high school recruit was spotted in attendance. He is being pursued by DU and Wyoming. In fact, a recruiting website, Verbal Commits, has shown DU has held an interest in Dallas for a number of years.

According to a recent article in SB Nation, University of Michigan head football coach Jim Harbaugh  planned and participated in a slumber party at a kicking recruit’s house.  Quinn Nordin is the nation’s leading high school kicker and he is a prized recruit of Penn State. “He said we can watch a movie, see how well we gel and he said he would sleep over after that,” Nordin told Scout.com. Apparently, things like commitments don’t mean much in big stakes recruiting so Harbaugh pushed the boundaries of the NCAA recruiting ‘dead period’ that ended at midnight and invited himself over for a slumber party to seal the deal.  Continue reading Sleeping Over With Recruits →

Double Digit Home Loss a … Positive

A confident UNO (13-7, 5-1 Summit) squad rolled into Denver (10 – 10, 2-5 Summit) on a 4-game road winning streak. The Mavericks, one of the highest scoring teams in the country with 85.9 points per game, were held to just 69 points but DU could only piece together 55 points of their own on a cold shooting night. The Mavs extended their road winning streak to an impressive 5 games.

Having watched IUPUI, South Dakota State, and IPFW -the league favorites, UNO has to be one of the favorites to win the regular season Summit League title. Their athleticism, inside game, and interior defense were the difference in this one. Senior forward Jake White was the star of the game for UNO with 29 points and 9 rebounds. Just a few days ago, I came up with the idea to put together a weekly mailbag about DU hockey. Eventually, this idea may extend to a DU Athletics mailbag, but I’m going to start smaller with just hockey and let it go from there.

The whole point behind this idea is that it’s difficult to cover everything that readers want to know and answering every single question isn’t easy with only reader comments. DU Ski Team Ambitious for 2016 Season

DU’s ski team has already generated a successful start to their 2016 season with podium finishes from a variety of skiers. Both the Alpine and Nordic ski teams have produced top results in the races they’ve competed in so far. After finishing second at the NCAA Championships last year, behind in-state rival University of Colorado-Boulder, the Pios are looking to reclaim the title to add to their national record of 22 NCAA Championship titles. Trend to Muzzle Cheer Spreads

Earlier this year, LetsGoDU covered a story about DU’s student section at hockey games  that was seen as too raucous by administrators. While that story is no longer an issue, Sports Illustrated had a story on the increasing pressure in the state of Wisconsin on High School chants that do not show ‘respect’ for competitors.

A solid UNO squad (12-7, 4-1 Summit) invade Magness Arena tonight. They have played Missouri, Colorado, and Minnesota tough and were, clearly, the most underrated team in the Summit Conference heading into the season.

In today’s edition of Omaha.com, a highly confident Senior Kyler Erickson said: “Traditionally, you want to split on the road,” he said, “but I think our attitude this weekend (against Denver & Oral Roberts) is we’re going to go and get two games.
