USCHO published an article on a DU recruit from Arizona, Michael Boyle. The article, Rapid Rise for Denver Recruit Boyle Hasn’t Come Without Stumbling Points, calls Boyle a potential 2016 NHL draft pick and in a class, perhaps, just after superstar Austin Mathews.
Many DU fans have called for more size on the defensive end. Well, Boyles stands 6’2″ and 210 pounds. The article states, Boyle’s size, athleticism and potential have caught the attention of the NHL scouts over the last year. The Denver Post had an in-depth article on his decision to take the Valor Christian (4-6-1) job and what it is like to coach high school players versus his prior coaching experience. He has taken all the changes in stride, “Being at Valor, I’ve got a lot on my plate. I’m a coach, a counselor and I arrange transportation. According to the Daily Mail, in order to protect fragile competitors, a girls basketball team has been kicked out of their league because they are too good. The article stated that the Minnesota Rogers Area Youth Basketball Association (RAYBA) team can no longer play in their local basketball league because they are ‘too talented’.
They were thrown out of the league with little notice before a league tournament was to be held. According to their coach, Jason Hanauska, ‘Three teams were threatening to I guess either forfeit the games against us or flat out quit the league.’ So of course, in a display of goodwill and compromise – the league threw them out. It was with great interest that I watched the twitter wars and blogs covering this past weekend’s hard fought Denver – Minnesota-Duluth hockey series. Pioneer (2-0/series) fans saw the series as a poorly officiated ‘chippy’ affair. On the other hand, the UMD (0-2/series) Bulldog blogs and twitter supporters saw the series as a highly competitive physical affair and characterized DU’s team and supporters as soft, spoiled babies.

With 7.8 seconds left and the score sitting at 2-1 in favor of the University of Denver Pioneres, three Minnesota-Duluth players, on each end of the ice, starting punching and tackling DU players. In true hockey form, DU players retaliated and the game was one punch away from a benches clearing brawl.
In the end, Denver won the game by a score of 2-1 and secured a very important sweep to put some more distance between them and the Bulldogs. For the first time since the New Year, the University of Denver couldn’t get anything going in the first period. After withstanding an early barrage by the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs in which DU starting goalie Tanner Jaillet gave up 2 goals, the Pioneers settled down and came back to win. At the UNO game yesterday, Dallas Walton a 6’10” high school recruit was spotted in attendance. He is being pursued by DU and Wyoming. In fact, a recruiting website, Verbal Commits, has shown DU has held an interest in Dallas for a number of years.
According to a recent article in SB Nation, University of Michigan head football coach Jim Harbaugh planned and participated in a slumber party at a kicking recruit’s house. Quinn Nordin is the nation’s leading high school kicker and he is a prized recruit of Penn State. “He said we can watch a movie, see how well we gel and he said he would sleep over after that,” Nordin told Scout.com. Apparently, things like commitments don’t mean much in big stakes recruiting so Harbaugh pushed the boundaries of the NCAA recruiting ‘dead period’ that ended at midnight and invited himself over for a slumber party to seal the deal. A confident UNO (13-7, 5-1 Summit) squad rolled into Denver (10 – 10, 2-5 Summit) on a 4-game road winning streak. The Mavericks, one of the highest scoring teams in the country with 85.9 points per game, were held to just 69 points but DU could only piece together 55 points of their own on a cold shooting night. The Mavs extended their road winning streak to an impressive 5 games.
Having watched IUPUI, South Dakota State, and IPFW -the league favorites, UNO has to be one of the favorites to win the regular season Summit League title. Their athleticism, inside game, and interior defense were the difference in this one. Senior forward Jake White was the star of the game for UNO with 29 points and 9 rebounds.
