Following two straight road splits in NCHC play against Western Michigan and St. Cloud State, the #3 Denver Pioneers returned to Denver and Magness Arena to host the #18 Omaha Mavericks. The Pioneers enjoyed the friendly confines as they rode a 4-goal effort in the second period to a resounding 5-2 victory over the Mavs.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a normal second-half Friday night if the Pios didn’t at least make it interesting, right? Continue reading Pioneers ride Mavericks out of Magness behind 4-goal 2nd period

4th line to top line: the Jarid Lukosevicius story

Like most freshmen, Jarid Lukosevicius was just competing for any spot in the lineup last year and he earned it: 4th line right wing for the 2015-16 University of Denver Pioneers. Not exactly the most glamorous spot, but hey, he was a freshman. Now a sophomore, Lukosevicius has ascended in the lineup to become the top line right wing as one of DU’s most consistent forwards. Over the weekend, the #1 University of Denver Pioneers traveled to St. Cloud, Minnesota to take on the St. Cloud State Huskies, a team that has had the Pios’ number over the year or so. Coming into the weekend, the Huskies had won 4 straight against Denver, including a win in Minneapolis during the NCHC Frozen Faceoff last year. Kortne Ford authors textbook early exit

Sure, the University of Denver has been jolted before by star athletes that leave early. But most of these departures have been managed pretty well. It’s been a few weeks since it was announced that junior Kortne Ford had signed with the Colorado Rapids. While circumstances vary widely on why student athletes depart college programs early, Ford’s exit was engineered to the benefit everyone. Continue reading Kortne Ford authors textbook early exit

What will DU do without the American Hero?

A college hockey team does not become one of the top teams in the nation because of one player. One player cannot dictate the success or failure of one team. Will the Denver Pioneers miss American Hero Troy Terry, who is out indefinitely with an upper-body injury? Absolutely. Is it reasonable to expect that they won’t be successful without him? Absolutely not. Continue reading What will DU do without the American Hero?

Zach Miller’s departure leaves a void

After hearing the report that star midfielder Zach Miller has left the DU men’s lacrosse program, I came across this highlight tape (below – ignore the music) of Miller and was reminded of his extraordinary stick handling, shot accuracy, passing, and more importantly, his ability to make everyone other Pioneer on the field better. Inside Lacrosse reported yesterday that star senior midfielder Zach Miller is not practicing with the Denver Pioneers lacrosse team and isn’t currently enrolled at DU.

“Zach has decided to take some time away from school,” DU head coach Bill Tierney told IL. “We are obviously disappointed in his decision, but respect his right to make it and hope that everything works out for him.” Continue reading REPORT: Zach Miller leaves Denver Men’s Lacrosse program

DU announces Troy Terry is out indefinitely, season likely not over

This is kind of old news at this point and there isn’t much more to add to the story, but just in case you haven’t heard, DU announced a few days ago that Troy Terry sustained an upper-body injury during the third period of Friday night’s game against Western Michigan and will be out indefinitely. Just two wild and crazy nights in Kalamazoo for the Pioneers

It was an…interesting weekend for the top-ranked University of Denver Pioneers when they traveled to Kalamazoo, Michigan to take on the #14 Western Michigan Broncos. There was some good, some bad, and a very disappointing bit of news. However, overall, earning a split with a vastly improved WMU team on their ice is a good result for DU as the stretch run draws ever closer. The Pioneers Need More Daniel Amigo

Photo: Daniel Amigo has been one of DU’s surprise stars this season

Fans have had 15 games to see the season unfold for DU Men’s Hoops. No doubt, the biggest surprise has been Daniel Amigo, on both the offensive and defensive end. He is the Pios’ second leading scorer with 14.4 points per game and leads the team with 7.6 rebounds per game. He’s accomplishing this in only 24 minutes per game on the floor. In short, he’s one of the most efficient players in the Summit League. Amigo is ranked 48th in the country in field goal percentage (55.2%). He scores more points per minute (offensive efficiency) than Fort Wayne star John Konchar (.6 vs .45 points per minute). Konchar is shooting an astounding 70.5% from the field and is 4th in the nation in field goal percentage. But. there is a problem.

Simply put, Denver needs more than 24 minutes per game from Daniel Amigo. Continue reading The Pioneers Need More Daniel Amigo
