For Denver, NCHC semifinal against North Dakota more than just another rivalry game

If you want to get a University of Denver hockey player’s blood boiling and heart pumping, all you have to do is mention North Dakota. The rivalry between the Pioneers and the Fighting Hawks goes back decades and there’s no love lost between the two programs. From conference tournament matchups to national seminfinal and title games, the hatred has festered and the fireworks fly every time the two programs take the ice. Friendship forged through rivalry, Liam Finlay & Tyson Jost remain close

Separating friendship from team allegiance can be difficult for some, but it’s nothing new for freshmen winger Liam Finlay of the University of Denver Pioneers and North Dakota Fighting Hawks star center Tyson Jost. While Jost and Finlay didn’t begin playing together until 2011-2012 in bantam at the Pursuit of Excellence Academy in Kelowna, British Columbia, they have known each other since they were 8 or 9-years old where they met at a hockey tournament. Tim Healy is a special guest columnist to LetsGoDU. Tim studied Hotel, Restaurant & Tourism Management at DU and follows the ski team closely. As the 4-day championships are concluded, here are Tim’s final thoughts on this season’s NCAA ski championships. 

Well……what a finish to the 2017 NCAA Skiing Championships. I’m still in shock about what happened Saturday (but a big thank you to the Hockey and Lacrosse teams for helping me get out of my shock by winning their games in spectacular fashion), so please forgive me if this piece is a little “incoherent”.  I’ll do my very best to explain what happened this weekend. Cannizzaro’s last-second heroics lift Denver over Notre Dame in instant classic

Denver-Notre Dame. It’s never a straightforward 10-7 game when these two teams meet. It always comes down to the final seconds and, recently, it’s always taken overtime. It seemed like that was going to happen again today as it was tied 10-10 in the waning seconds of the game, but the #5 University of Denver Pioneers’ Connor Cannizzaro had a different idea as he scored with the clock reading 0:00. Denver rides Evan Cowley’s second straight shutout to sweep of Tigers and into 4th straight Frozen Faceoff

For the fourth straight year, the top-ranked University of Denver Pioneers will head to Minneapolis for the Frozen Faceoff thanks to Evan Cowley’s 4-0 shutout of the Colorado College Tigers on Saturday night. The win was the Pioneers’ 14th straight over CC and clinched the first-round series sweep. WATCH: Jim Montgomery talks Game 1 victory over Colorado College

The top-ranked University of Denver Pioneers took Game One of the NCHC Tournament first round best-of-three series from the Colorado College Tigers last night with a 4-1 win. They had to overcome a slow, disjointed first period to do it, but they did what the had to do with a strong second period performance. Denver overcomes slow first period to take Game 1 from Colorado College

It wasn’t exactly the start to the first playoff game of the year that the top-ranked University of Denver Pioneers had envisioned this week. However, as they’ve done so many times before this year, they used the first intermission to make some much-needed adjustments and they didn’t look back as they topped the Colorado College Tigers 4-1. Skiing Championships at the midway point: DU tangles with familiar foes

Tim Healy is a special guest columnist to LetsGoDU. Tim Studied Hotel, Restaurant & Tourism Management at DU and follows the ski team closely. As the 4-day championships hit the mid-point, here are Tim’s thoughts on this season’s NCAA ski championships. 

The Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association Championships came to a close Sunday, February 26th in Minturn, Colorado, the Colorado Buffalo’s won the team title by a razor-thin margin of 7.5 points over Denver. Omaha’s near miss validates Denver’s course

They came within a single last minute shot of defeating South Dakota State University in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Omaha native Tre-Deon Hollins hoisted a 3-point shot that was off the mark and the Omaha Mavericks fell 79-77. The Summit League auto-bid went to South Dakota State University – again. Breakthrough Colorado College study cites hockey woes & proposes solutions

Colorado College’s (7-22-4) failure on the ice has resulted in widespread campus dissatisfaction. As the Tiger’s featured athletic program, men’s ice hockey continues to falter during the 2016-2017 season. An internal campus survey shows that “horrible Hockey” caused widespread (63%) campus dissatisfaction.
