Offense Stays Hot as Pioneers Complete Season-Opening Alaska Sweep
If you thought #4 Denver’s (2-0-0, 0-0-0 NCHC) season-opening 7-3 romp over the Alaska Nanooks (0-2-0) on Saturday was impressive, then you certainly thought the follow-up performance was too. Denver Opens 2023-24 Season With 7-3 Drubbing of Alaska
The #4 Denver Pioneers (1-0-0, 0-0-0 NCHC) opened their season on the road for the first time since the 2019-20 season. Just like that season, the Pios made the long trek to Fairbanks to take on the Alaska Nanooks. However, unlike that trip, Denver opened this campaign with a dominant 7-3 victory (instead of a tight, 4-3 win that year). Junior forward Jack Devine and sophomore defenseman Kent Anderson each scored twice while Boston Buckberger, Aidan Thompson, and senior captain McKade Webster rounded out the Pios’ 7-goal onslaught. McKade Webster begins Leadership Role Against Alaska
McKade Webster ascended from Alternate Captain during the 2022-23 season to Captain ‘C’ for this season. Connor Caponi, Carter King, and Massimo Rizzo were named alternates. In the modern era, only Grant Arnold held the role for multiple years (2014-2016). Following Arnold, Will Butcher, Tariq Hammond, Colin Staub, Ian Mitchell, Kohen Olischefski, Cole Guttman, and Justin Lee held the prized designation.
