According to The Henchinger Report, “There has been a steady drop in the proportion of high school graduates enrolling in college after they finish high school — from a high of 70 percent in 2016 to 63 percent in 2020, the most recent year for which the figure is available, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. While the pandemic made things worse, the enrollment downturn took hold well before it started; there were already two and a half million fewer students at colleges and universities by the time that Covid set in than there were in 2012. It was the 1974 school year. The time of President Nixon’s resignation, the Middle East oil embargo, and a Swedish rock group called ABBA was all the rage in Europe. That same school year, four female lacrosse players joined the DU men’s lacrosse ‘B’ team, playing against Air Force in Colorado Springs to open the season. The final score, an 18-1 AFA drubbing of Denver, was the least important event that day, as players from both teams dealt with a new trend that was sweeping the nation – women playing college sports. When the University of Denver formally released new logo brand guidelines to the public this past September, the announcement was met with mixed reviews. Of greater concern to many was the future of the ‘Denver Arch’, absent from the brand release. In Athletics, the Denver arch was a critical part of Denver’s athletic identity, especially in hockey. It was with sadness that we learned of Peter McNab’s passing early today. McNab was a Canadian-born hockey player. He played 14 seasons in the NHL from 1973 to 1987 for the Buffalo Sabres, Boston Bruins, Vancouver Canucks and New Jersey Devils. He later served as the color commentator for the Colorado Avalanche from their inaugural 1995-96 season until his death. DU fans will remember him as a great Pioneer. Was there a hockey game Saturday night?
But DU saved the best memory for last, as DU sophomore Jack Devine won the Saturday night game, rifling a 20- foot wrister to break a 2-2 tie just 1:15 into overtime, sending over 6,000 DU fans into a happy conclusion to Homecoming weekend, completing the sweep of the Providence Friars on the weekend in one of the more physical non-league series in recent years.
