Pioneer Captain Dave Tomassoni (’75) Passes Away at 69
The Denver Pioneer hockey family lost an inspirational former team captain, David Tomassoni (Denver, ’75) who passed away from Aymotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) on August 11th in his native Minnesota. He was 69 years old.
Tomassoni helped bring DU to two Frozen Fours in the 1970s and served as DU’s captain under coach Murray Armstrong in his senior season in 1974-75, before going on to a 16-year pro hockey career, mostly played in Italy. After his hockey career ended, he served for 30 years in the Minnesota State Legislature, retiring earlier this year following his 2021 ALS diagnosis. Incorporating the Controversial New DU Logo on Hockey Uniforms
We still have no information on the new interlocking DU logo’s place on Denver Hockey uniforms. While there are thousands of possible combinations, we looked at four options below. Assuming the new uniforms must have the new logo (which, we’re all still holding out hope this mandate is delayed until a better, more well-thought-out rebrand is considered), which one of the four options do you prefer?

Bonnie Brae Tavern Closing, Set for Demolition
A few years ago, it was apparent that the Bonnie Brae Tavern was likely to be demolished and redeveloped. Well, sadly, that article was prescient and the famous restaurant’s time has come.
The Bonnie Brae Tavern, 740 South University Avenue, is closing this month. The throwback tavern and pizza shop, across from the Campus Lounge, will be meeting the wrecking ball. The 88-year-old institution will close June 25. New buyers, Churchill Bunn and Rhys Duggan, purchased the property for $4.5 million with plans to build a three-story apartment complex. Legendary DU Goaltender George Kirkwood Passes Away at 84
There have been a lot of great goalies at the University of Denver over the years, and one of the best of them, George Kirkwood, passed away last month at age 84 in his native Edmonton, Alberta.
Kirkwood’s passing is surely sad news for his surviving family, former teammates, friends, and associates. And the Pioneer Nation — even those younger Pio fans who never had the chance to know him personally or watch him play — will remember his name and exploits for as long as hockey players skate for the University of Denver. For the University of Denver Pioneers, playing against the University of Michigan Wolverines in the NCAA Hockey Tournament has always seemed cursed, providing very painful memories for Pioneer Nation. For in all the proud history between these two of the three most successful programs ever (as measured by NCAA titles — Michigan’s nine and Denver’s eight NCAA crowns), the two schools have only met three times (2002, 1999 and 1964) in NCAA tourney play.
