Denver Loses 4-1 Lead and Falls to North Dakota, 7-5

Denver (10-4-1, 3-2-0) jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first period but North Dakota came back with four goals in the final period to overcome a 5-3 deficit. A goal by UND’s Riese Gaber gave the Fighting Hawks the lead, 6-5, at 16:25 of the third period and North Dakota’s Cameron Burg buried a goal 30 seconds later to sink DU. The Fighting Hawks were opportunistic and kept DU bottled up on their own end much of the second and third periods. Denver has work to do on both ends of the ice if they intend to earn a split Saturday night. Continue reading Denver Loses 4-1 Lead and Falls to North Dakota, 7-5

It’s Academic, Denver Better Than Yale 9-0

Denver (10-3-1, 3-1-0) came out from the jump with speed and possession against Yale, and  the Pioneers passed the test with high honors Saturday night, 9-0. With defensemen Shai Buium and Garrett Brown out with injuries, DU relied on a solid forecheck and offensive zone efficiency to defeat the Bulldogs and sweep Yale in the two-game set. Denver Stifles Yale in 5-0 Win

With injured backup goalie Matt Davis out of the lineup and freshman goalie Freddie Halyk struggling the last several games, DU brought in a goaltender, Paxton Geisel, during the academic break for insurance. In the end, all DU (9-3-1, 3-1-0) had to do was keep leading the NCAA in scoring (5.25 gpg.) and hold Yale to a mere 13 shots-on-goal in a dominant 5-0 shutout win for Halyk and the Pioneers Friday night at home. Jay Stickney Looks to Yale and What Might Have Been

This weekend marks an emotional moment of deep reflection for DU hockey broadcaster Jay Stickney. Overachieving Fall Sports Come to a Close

An over-performing, cobbled-together volleyball team finished with a share of the regular season Summit League Title with three other teams. They traveled to Vermillion, S.D. for the Summit League Tournament, won the first round, advanced to the semifinal and fell Monday to the Omaha Mavericks in five sets (21-25, 21-25, 25-20, 25-15, 14-16). The Pioneers battled back from a two-game deficit and lost in extra points. The team started 1-7 in non-conference play with a new coach and the loss of key players. Four Goal Second Period Dooms Denver in 4-3 Loss to Omaha

Following a Saturday night 0-0 first period and 18-hour delay, Omaha and Denver (8-3-1) hockey resumed the final 40 minutes of hockey Sunday afternoon at Magness Arena. It was the first five minutes and the last four minutes of the second period when Denver miscues allowed to visiting Mavs to score four goals, enough to forge a 4-3 win and a series split. Slush Halts Denver-Omaha Hockey Tilt

Saturday night’s game between Denver and Omaha hockey at Magness Arena was going to be a  test of wills. After a Friday 8-4 blowout of the Mavs, two questions remained: Would Omaha come out with more fire and battle for the split? Would DU build on their prior night’s eight-goal scoring binge?

Fans will have to wait until Sunday to find out.

As the old adage says, “A watched pot never boils.”

After a scoreless first period, a slushy puddle formed over the NCHC logo behind the Denver goal – apparently the logo protruded through the ice following resurfacing from the Zamboni. Officials and arena personnel worked furiously to cut away the logo and patch the divot but a puddle of water remained over the slushy patch-job. After a delay of an hour, the schools’ athletic directors and NCHC commissioner Heather Weems met on the ice to assess the situation. Ultimately, the decision was to postpone until Sunday to ensure player safety.

The game will resume at the beginning of the second period at 2pm MT Sunday.
