Pioneers fall to shorthanded Bulldogs as unbeaten streak ends at 11

DENVER – The #10 Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs (14-9-2, 9-4-2-0) came to Denver shorthanded. Coming into Friday night’s game against the #4 Denver Pioneers (17-5-5, 7-4-4-3), it was unknown whether star UMD defensemen Scott Perunovich and Dylan Samberg would play in either game this weekend. As it turned out, Perunovich was healthy enough to play but Samberg was not which left the Bulldogs with a short defensive core that saw them rotate 3-4 blueliners throughout much of the evening. It would not matter, though, as the Bulldogs played well enough and got enough of a boost from an officiating controversy a Brett Stapley game misconduct (referees Ryan Hersey and Joe Sullivan made their first return to Denver since their UMass-Amherst debacle) to win 3-2 at Magness Arena. Denver Hockey Series Preview: Minnesota Duluth

It’s been quite the start to 2020 for the #5 Denver Pioneers.  Dating back to December, the Pios haven’t lost in their last 11 games.  And last week’s series against Miami may have been one of their strongest defensively.  Holding the RedHawks to under 23 shots in both contests, Denver possessed the puck well and only took three penalties all weekend keeping Miami’s hot power play off the ice.  When David Carle met with the media this week, he said the difference between his team now and a few months ago is that they’re better at growing after each game.  Now, Denver faces #10 Minnesota Duluth and #2 North Dakota in back-to-back series and will have an opportunity to keep this roll going against two of the best teams in the country.

Since the 1-4-3 streak from November 8 through December 7 against Minnesota Duluth, North Dakota, Western Michigan, and Arizona State, Denver has not lost. That’s a stretch of 10 games in which Denver has gone 8-0-2 that was kickstarted by a sweep of Colorado College in the first home-and-home rivalry series of the season. This stretch continued this weekend for the #5 Denver Pioneers (17-4-5, 7-3-4-3) as they swept the 7th-place Miami RedHawks (6-14-4, 3-9-2-1) with 3-2 and 5-2 victories in Oxford, Ohio. Whether you saw it coming or not, the Pioneers had their hands full last weekend with Omaha.  The Pioneers tied the Mavericks in both games but they came away with the extra points in the standings to pull within two points of Minnesota Duluth.  Omaha has now given North Dakota and Denver a run for their money in back to back weekends and is earning a reputation of being a hard out.  Come NCHC Tournament time, Omaha will not be a team that anybody wants to run into in the first round. This weekend, the Pioneers bring their nine-game unbeaten streak to Oxford, Ohio to face the Miami RedHawks.

Weekend Recap: Denver Hockey comes home from Omaha with four of six points

As doubtful as it looked with 14 seconds left in regulation on Saturday night, the #4 Denver Pioneers’ (15-4-5, 5-3-4-3) unbeaten streak against the Nebraska Omaha Mavericks (9-10-4, 3-6-3-0) is still alive thanks to two ties at Baxter Arena this weekend. If it wasn’t for Bobby Brink’s goal with 13 seconds left in Game Two, the streak would have ended at 17. Instead, Brink scored on one hell of a wrist shot from the left circle to send the second game of the weekend to overtime and preserve the streak. Brink’s goal also gave the Pioneers a chance to salvage another two NCHC points on the weekend. in the end, thanks to both ties and subsequent NCHC overtime/shootout victories, Denver came back home with four of the six points at stake in Omaha. Last-minute Bobby Brink goal gives Pioneers tie against Omaha as unbeaten streak reaches 18

The streak is going to end eventually. The Denver Pioneers aren’t going to just never lose to Omaha for the rest of time. That’s not how hockey works. That’s not how sports work. But, for now, the streak is still alive thanks to  Bobby Brink’s game-tying goal with 13.8 seconds left in regulations. Neither the #4 Pioneers (15-4-5, 5-3-4-3) nor Mavericks (9-10-4, 3-6-3-0) scored in regulation overtime (what a great oxymoron) and the game ended in a 2-2 tie at Baxter Arena in Omaha. Michael Davies did score in three-on-three overtime to give the Pioneers the second point and ensure that the Pioneers came home with four of the six possible points. With the official tie, Denver now has not lost to Omaha since January 2014. Continue reading Last-minute Bobby Brink goal gives Pioneers tie against Omaha as unbeaten streak reaches 18

Goaltender Isaiah Saville played strongly for the University of Nebraska Omaha Mavericks and held the #4 Denver Pioneers to a lone first-period goal from Tyler Ward through 65 minutes of regulation NCAA hockey at Baxter Arena in Omaha, Nebraska. Meanwhile, the Mavericks were able to stay in the game and eventually capitalize with a third-period shorthanded goal to force overtime at 1-1. Brett Edwards then gave the Pioneers the extra point in the NCHC standings with a goal in the fifth round of the shootout.
