Pioneers overcome UMass-Amherst & officials to sweep Minutemen

DENVER – Any hockey fan worth their salt understands that outcomes are never blamed on the officials. Sure, officials can play a significant role in a game’s flow and predictability, but in the end, it’s the two teams on the ice that determine who wins and loses. Tonight, in the #7 Denver Pioneers’ final nonconference game of the season against #9 UMass-Amherst Minutemen, was a perfect example of just that as the Pioneers had to beat the opposition and overcome some…inconsistent officiating to earn an emotional 4-3 victory and sweep the Minutemen at Magness Arena to end the season’s nonconference slate. Pioneers withstand UMass-Amherst push & Filip Lindberg heroics to exact Frozen Four revenge

DENVER – Filip Lindberg is a good goaltender. Denver Pioneers fans found that out just eight months ago on the ice in Buffalo at the Frozen Four where he backstopped the UMass-Amherst Minutemen to an overtime victory over the Pioneers. The #7 Pioneers were not-so-kindly reminded of that in their first matchup with the #9 Minutemen since that late April night in upstate New York. Only this time, at Magness Arena, Cole Guttman found a way to solve him in regulation for a 4-2 Pioneers win. Former University of Denver head hockey coach Jim Montgomery issued the following statement today:

Statement by Jim Montgomery

January 3, 2020

Losing my job as head coach of the Dallas Stars last month was a wake-up call. I let the team’s front office, staff and players down. More importantly, I let my wife and family down. The team’s decision to end my role forced me to look into the mirror and decide whether I want to continue living a damaging lifestyle or get help. I decided to get help. I turned to professionals in the field of alcohol abuse for their guidance and counseling. It has been an overwhelming and a very humbling experience knowing that I am not alone. Today, with the unconditional support of my wife and family, and many close friends, I took another step forward by admitting myself into an inpatient residential program, where I intend to take the steps to be a better husband, father, friend, coach and mentor – one day at a time. Its a process I am committed to. As I do this, I ask my families privacy be respected. Thanks Monty.

Coach Montgomery was always a great friend to LetsGoDU and the Denver hockey community. We wish coach Montgomery the very best in his personal battle. Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Montgomery family as well.

Denver Hockey Series Preview: UMass-Amherst

Welcome back to Denver Hockey! We hope everyone had a nice holiday break and is starting the new year off right.  It was nice to see Denver closeout 2019 with a sweep of Colorado College.  And with some much-needed rest, the #7 Pioneers can kick off the second half of their season with some tough competition when the #9 UMass-Amherst Minutemen come to Magness Arena for a rematch of last year’s Frozen Four semifinal.  Star defenseman Cale Makar has since moved on from college to the Colorado Avalanche, but the Minutemen are again another dangerous team from the east coast.  Pioneers head coach David Carle said Thursday on the upcoming series, “the biggest thing for us is to come out and play to our identity and I think we can get the results that we want.” Continue reading Denver Hockey Series Preview: UMass-Amherst →

UMass-Amherst Seeks Comfort Following Last Season’s NCAA Championship Loss

These days, many universities are teeming with emotional support animals. The University of Massachusetts-Amherst leads the pack. According to a recent article, at the University of Massachusetts – Amherst, emotional support animals skyrocketed from five in the fall of 2015 to 118 two years later before dipping to the current 83. Among the Minutemen menagerie in that time are “Miniature pig, bearded dragons, geckos, rats, and birds,” according to university spokeswoman Mary Dettloff. Top Moment of the Decade: DU’s 2015 NCAA Lacrosse Championship transcended DU – it was a watershed moment in the history of lacrosse in America as this victory moved it from an eastern game to a national game.

Pioneers take down Tigers in dominating fashion to sweep weekend & take commanding Gold Pan edge

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – If you read last night’s recap, the one that summed up the #8 Denver Pioneers’ shutout of the archrival Colorado College Tigers, you could have copied and pasted that into this space right here. And I did indeed think about doing that. But last night’s game was a shutout for Denver and this one wasn’t. But CC’s goal was about the only difference between Friday and Saturday night as Denver traveled south to the World Arena to close out 2019 and the first half of the 2019-2020 Battle for the Gold Pan with a 3-1 win and clinch the sweep. The sweep puts Denver in full control of the Gold Pan series as just another win or tie in the second half of the series in March will guarantee the trophy’s return to Denver. Pioneers hold serve in first Gold Pan matchup as Devin Cooley shuts out rival CC Tigers

DENVER – Mired in a 1-4-3 slump, the #8 Denver Pioneers were in need of a spark, anything at all that might give them some extra motivation. After an underwhelming two games in the desert against Arizona State that saw Denver lose to and tie the Sun Devils, the Pioneers – thanks to a stellar shutout performance by goaltender Devin Cooley – got back on track in the first game of the season against the unranked archrival Colorado College Tigers with a  3-0 victory at Magness Arena. The win gave Denver the early edge in earning back the coveted Gold Pan trophy, awarded annually to the winner of the DU-CC series.
