Shorthanded Denver Swept in 3-1 Loss to North Dakota

Denver fell behind North Dakota, 1-0, after a slow start in the first period and struggled to score goals the balance of the game as they fell 3-1 in Grand Forks, North Dakota. The absence of injured forwards Jaakko Heikenen and Bobby Brink hurt the Pioneers offense, which was unable to create many grade ‘A’ scoring chances during the game. Denver Hockey Series Preview: North Dakota

With the Pioneers riding an 11-game unbeaten streak into the series with the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs, not many would’ve predicted Denver getting swept at home.  It was an opportune moment for the Pioneers to take a strong position in the NCHC standings, but instead, they fall to a 3rd place tie with Western Michigan, each with 28 points.  Head coach David Carle said that the Pioneers couldn’t match the intensity that UMD brought in the second game and they simply lost to the better team.  The schedule doesn’t get any easier and no love will be lost as Denver travels to Grand Forks for a Valentine’s Weekend series with a Fighting Hawks team that is 14-1 at home this year.

New North Dakota Scoreboard Displaces Duo

You may have heard about the new massive scoreboard at the University of North Dakota’s Ralph Englestad Arena. However, the change has caused some unintended consequences.

The old scoreboard was operated by Raymond Schmidt and Dewey Olson. Both men scaled the 65-foot ladder two hours before each game and manually inserted score, time outs and shots-on-goal for the Fighting Hawks. Continue reading New North Dakota Scoreboard Displaces Duo

Denver swept by Minnesota Duluth in uninspired 4-1 loss

DENVER – The #4 Denver Pioneers (17-6-5, 7-5-4-3) are a top-10 team for a reason. They have talent up and down their lineup, they have depth at every position, and their ability to play a 200-foot game of hockey is nearly unmatched. It’s for those reasons that their record is as good as it is this late in the season. But this weekend, especially in the second game of their series with the #10 Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs (15-9-2, 10-4-2-0), the Pioneers lacked those very same factors en route to losing 4-1 as the Bulldogs finished off the sweep at Magness Arena. It’s the first time the Pioneers were swept at home since St. Cloud State managed the feat in December 2015. Continue reading Denver swept by Minnesota Duluth in uninspired 4-1 loss

Pioneers fall to shorthanded Bulldogs as unbeaten streak ends at 11

DENVER – The #10 Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs (14-9-2, 9-4-2-0) came to Denver shorthanded. Coming into Friday night’s game against the #4 Denver Pioneers (17-5-5, 7-4-4-3), it was unknown whether star UMD defensemen Scott Perunovich and Dylan Samberg would play in either game this weekend. As it turned out, Perunovich was healthy enough to play but Samberg was not which left the Bulldogs with a short defensive core that saw them rotate 3-4 blueliners throughout much of the evening. It would not matter, though, as the Bulldogs played well enough and got enough of a boost from an officiating controversy a Brett Stapley game misconduct (referees Ryan Hersey and Joe Sullivan made their first return to Denver since their UMass-Amherst debacle) to win 3-2 at Magness Arena. Denver Hockey Series Preview: Minnesota Duluth

It’s been quite the start to 2020 for the #5 Denver Pioneers.  Dating back to December, the Pios haven’t lost in their last 11 games.  And last week’s series against Miami may have been one of their strongest defensively.  Holding the RedHawks to under 23 shots in both contests, Denver possessed the puck well and only took three penalties all weekend keeping Miami’s hot power play off the ice.  When David Carle met with the media this week, he said the difference between his team now and a few months ago is that they’re better at growing after each game.  Now, Denver faces #10 Minnesota Duluth and #2 North Dakota in back-to-back series and will have an opportunity to keep this roll going against two of the best teams in the country.
