The No. 4 Pioneers travel to Grand Forks North Dakota to take on the No. 11 Fighting Hawks in their second series of the season
After a sweep of the Nebraska Omaha Mavericks last weekend, it looks as though Denver is back to playing Pioneer hockey. Goaltender Tanner Jaillet put the team on his back and recorded two consecutive shutouts earning himself the NCAA’s second star of the week. Freshman Ian Mitchell scored a goal and four assists making him the NCHC’s player of the week. And Mr. Borgström made the highlight reel once again. The University of North Dakota’s Ralph Engelstad Arena, which seats 11,643 and opened on October 5, 2001, is undergoing a major renovation for the 2019-2020 season.
Athletic Director Brian Faison said in a press release, “After extensive study, we have determined that our major competition for the consumer dollar is not other schools but Costco and Wal-Mart. Our goal is to make Ralph Englestad Arena a year-round lifestyle destination. ” Faison goes on to state that in Phase 1, the facility will be adding tire sales, a dentist office, roofing and siding services, a medical clinic, barber, pet grooming, showers and a laundry. Fighting Hawks fans cite head coach Jim Montgomery’s ‘special relationship’ with the referees which elevates his status above all others. Not to mention Denver’s deep pockets and cozy NCHC relationships which allow them to impact the way games are called.
Last night, the #5 University of Denver Pioneers shut out the #15 University of Nebraska Omaha Mavericks for the second straight night, 4-0. Tanner Jaillet was stellar between the pipes, Henrik Borgström scored his third goal of the second half, and the Pioneers continued their current second-half roll. They’ve won three straight games and have dominated play in five straight.
Back-to-back shutouts and reaching the 100-game milestone is an accomplishment in and of its own. #5 University of Denver Pioneers goaltender Tanner Jaillet appears to have fully regained his Mike Richter Award-winning form from a year ago. For the second straight night, Jaillet shut out one of the best offenses in the country, 4-0. The #5 University of Denver Pioneers shut out the #15 University of Nebraska Omaha Mavericks, 5-0. It was as dominant as the Pioneers have looked all year and, according to DU head coach Jim Montgomery, it’s the fourth straight game that they’ve been “hard to play against.” It seems that once again, things might be coming together for the Pios in the second half. Who could have guessed?
In two games against the Miami (OH) RedHawks last weekend, the #15 University of Nebraska Omaha Mavericks tallied 15 goals. They scored an astonishing 11 in Friday night’s game and four on Saturday.
