Seniors Guide Pios to Winning Regular Season

Photo: Marcus Byrd delivers a 3-point dagger

It was only appropriate Saturday afternoon that DU seniors Marcus Byrd, Nate Engesser, and Bryant Rucker played key roles in a decisive Pioneer (15-14) victory 70-59 at Magness Arena over North Dakota State University (18-12).

The Pioneers started slowly, trailing 0-5, to start the game but quickly played the Bison even-up through the first half. The teams went to intermission tied at 29 but the Pioneers depth took its toll on the visiting Bison in the second half. A lively crowd, supporting the graduating seniors, combined with spillover from lax, created a great afternoon for a contest that eventually guaranteed a winning regular season for DU. Saturday Presents Huge Game for Denver Men’s Basketball

LetsGoDU predicted 11 wins for the 2015-16 DU men’s hoops (14-14) squad based on their schedule, roster turnover, inexperience, and a host of unknowns regarding this year’s squad.

They passed that figure January 28th with a 66-52 win against against South Dakota at Magness Arena and have added three more victories since. Continue reading Saturday Presents Huge Game for Denver Men’s Basketball →

LetsGoDU ‘Big Event’ Super Survey

Puck Swami challenged DU to put on Big Events in his article Think Big, Denver . So we have put together the LetsGoDU Big Event Super Survey. In the survey, we provide a Big Event concept and venue. Of course, we know that it takes years to work out schedules and plan such events, but we wanted to paint a picture of what it would take to create such an event that would draw local and regional interest.

Vote for your favorite option and feel free to comment with any other ideas you might have.

The LetsGoDU Big Event Super Survey ends Wednesday, March 2nd.

DU Drops Tight Game to ORU

DU (13-14) tied the game on a Marcus Byrd 3-point  shot with 1:15 remaining but Oral Roberts University (14-14) capitalized on free throws and shots from the low block in the closing minutes to escape with a 62-58 win over DU in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Yet again, DU played close enough to win, especially in the second half, but could not get it done in the final minutes.

DU seems to take nearly every game to wire this season and this game was no exception. Continue reading DU Drops Tight Game to ORU →

Pio’s Lose in 3-Point Fest

The Pioneers hit twenty 3-pointers, a school record, and fell in a tight contest on the road to IPFW, 84-87.

The Denver Pioneers (13-13) dropped a road contest to IPFW (20-7) in Fort Waytne this evening. DU played the Mastodons (10-1 home) tough and made it a game. Max Landis for IPFW hit seven 3’s and Marcus Byrd hammered home eight trays from beyond the arc. Nate Engesser pumped in another six 3’s. The Pioneers shot an incredible 62.5% from three point territory while the Mastodons shot an even more unbelievable 66.7% from the arc. Thirty two 3- point shots by both teams led to 96 points, 56% of the total points scored in the game. Inside Game Abandons Pioneers in 60-63 Loss

Thursday night, the University of Denver (13-12) fell to Western Illinois (9-13), 60-63 at Magness Arena.

The Pioneers had a chance to move to 14-11 and an excellent opportunity to finish the season 500 or better with three road games and one home game remaining. Instead, after losing to the last place Leathernecks at home,  they board a plane tomorrow morning to play Oral Roberts in a battle to finish their 3-game road trip above 500. DU Crashes the Boards & Dashes Omaha, 75-72

UNO (15-10) returned home to Baxter Arena to face the Denver Pioneers. The Pioneers (13-11) dominated the boards (39-25), outscored the Omaha bench by 23 points, and overcame the second half loss of Joe Rosga and 18 turnovers for the big road win. The Pioneers were tied twice by the Mavericks who shut down a 16 point second half deficit  – but DU never trailed. Continue reading DU Crashes the Boards & Dashes Omaha, 75-72 →

Cheaters Bail After LetsGoDU Article

The pressure on Louisville, following a LetsGoDU article published earlier this week, has led them to announce that they have ‘volunteered’ to skip post season play this season, according to the New York Times.

This decision helps to eliminate potential embarrassment during this post-season Men’s NCAA basketball tournament, especially if Louisville advanced, with a mountain of evidence showing improprieties in recruiting. Continue reading Cheaters Bail After LetsGoDU Article →

Mackey Lifts Up Pioneers to Avoid a Home Beat Down

The IUPUI (11-14) Jaguars rolled into Magness Arena Thursday night in a 3-way tie for first place in the Summit and pummeled DU (12-11) the first 30 minutes of play.

No sense giving the play-by-play of the first half. Denver played one of their most forgettable twenty minutes in recent history shooting 37% from the floor, committing 9 turnovers, giving up 20 rebounds, and going 0-7 from three point land to make this, perhaps, the most inept half of basketball ever seen in Joe Scott’s coaching tenure at DU.  In a near mathematical improbability, the Pioneers were trailing by ONLY 9, 21-30, at the break.
