CC vs DU: More Than Just a Rivalry

When you grow up in the 719, rooting for the Colorado College Tigers is instilled in you from a very young age. Colorado College hockey and Colorado Springs are one and the same. You don’t have to be a hockey expert to understand that the rivalry between CC and the University of Denver is like none other. Nor do you have to have an actual reason to hate DU when you live in Colorado Springs…you just do. Continue reading CC vs DU: More Than Just a Rivalry

Puck Swami: Where are the Pio Fans?

The University of Denver hockey team has lost only once in its last ten games, charging into third place in the NCHC and back into the NCAA tournament picture. In short, we all watch a good team that is playing well, and most worthy of our fan support. In fact, DU has had more consecutive 20-win seasons than any team in the country (14), with eight straight NCAA appearances. The product on the ice is terrific. College Hockey News Names Pios Team of the Week

College Hockey News  featured the University of Denver as their Team of the Week. Coach Jim Montgomery acknowledged that the holiday break gave the team a chance to get reinvigorated and refocused – both coaches and players.

In addition to improved goaltending, Montgomery focused on the team’s priorities going forward: “I would say there’s three areas. It’s our power play, number one,” said Montgomery, in reference to a power play unit that is 11-for-76 this season, ranking 44th in the country. “Second is scoring 5-on-5 goals, and third is breaking out of our end clean.”

Postscript – NCAA Compromises for Big 12

As a follow-up to yesterday’s article on the Big 10 proposal to require inner-league divisions and league championship game for football conferences in order to qualify for the national championship playoffs, the NCAA FBS members voted yesterday on a compromise which will only require a league championship game. The means, essentially, that the Big 12 will not be required to add two teams to create divisions. However, they must hold a playoff between their top two teams in order to qualify for the national championship playoffs.

Many of DU’s athletes compete in relative anonymity. Still, this year has shown some eye opening individual and team performances from DU women.

  • Gymnast Nina McGee, performing a floor exercise at a home event this weekend at Magness Arena, scored a perfect 10.  The DU team went on to defeat Southern Utah and West Virginia.
  • Paige Bradley, a senior guard, scored her 1,000th Pioneer point on January 1st and then led the Pioneers to two consecutive victories this week over North Dakota State and IPFW. She scored a career high 31 against NDSU and chipped in 13 Saturday in an overtime home win.

Mascot Controversy Continues to Rage

Ragnar 3

As temperatures plunge for the NFL Vikings – Seahawks wildcard game this Sunday, in Minneapolis, the response to former mascot Joe Juranitch has heated up. As reported by LetsGoDU earlier this week, Juranitich, who played the mascot ‘Ragnar the Viking’ for 21 years, received his unconditional release this fall after seeking a hefty pay raise from $1,500 per game to $20,000 per game. On a Fox pregame video prior to last weekend’s Viking-Greenbay game, Juranitich ditched his Viking helmet & horns and donned a cheesehead – enough to boil blood in Minnesota.  Continue reading Mascot Controversy Continues to Rage

According to the Denver Business Journal, one of the most expensive real estate transactions in Denver history just took place near DU for a jaw-dropping $82 million dollars. Located at the S.E. corner of University and E. Evans Ave., the property includes 213 apartments in 11 stories and 23,366 square feet of retail that is occupied by tenants such as Qdoba and Bank of America. The per-apartment price, excluding the retail space, was about $345,000, the highest ever paid for a 50-plus unit apartment complex in Denver. Turncoat Mascot Sends a Chill Across the Upper Midwest

Ragnar 2

LetsGoDU covered the controversy this past fall when the Minnesota Vikings mascot, Ragnar, was dumped by the team. In a public news release, the Vikings graciously thanked Joe Juranitch who played Ragnar for his service but stated, “it was time to move on”. Behind the scenes, Mr. Juaranitch was campaigning for an astounding pay increase from $1,500 per game to $20,000 per game.

All was quiet until this past weekend. Then, in the ultimate display of betrayal to the mascot code, Ragner  in a video that aired Sunday morning on Fox swapped out his Viking helmet for a cheesehead in a nod to the Vikings key rival, the dreaded Packers. Randy Moss, a commentator for Fox quickly condemned this act of betrayal to Minnesota.
