DU Athletes Conquer the ‘Ice River’ at Beijing Olympic Games
This week saw the start of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. The Denver Pioneers are well represented in multiple sports. The first sport to see a Pioneer in action was Alpine Skiing and the Men’s Super-G on Monday. Denver Alum Trevor Phillip (’15) of Team Canada powered through the challenging course to a top-10 finish. This was Trevor’s 3rd Olympic Games, having competed in Sochi 2014 & PyeongChang 2018 games. Part 2: Eight Pioneers Headed to 2022 Beijing Olympic Games
At least eight athletes who wear (or who have worn) the Crimson and Gold of the University of Denver Pioneers have been named to participate in the 2022 Beijing Olympic Winter Games by their respective Olympic Teams, slated to begin in China in February. Part II of this two-part series, below, profiles four more DU alumni skiers headed to Beijing — three who have been named to the Canadian ski team (Amelia Smart, Trevor Philp and Erik Read) and DU skiing alumna Andrea Komšić, who will ski for Croatia in her third Olympic Games. Eight Pioneers Headed to 2022 Beijing Olympic Games – Part 1
At least eight current or past University of Denver athletes have been named to national teams participating in the 2022 Beijing Olympic Winter Games, scheduled to begin in February. Two DU athletes are slated to represent Team USA – current DU ski team member Katie Hensien and DU hockey alumnus Nick Shore. Additionally, DU hockey alumnus Juho Olkinoura and cross-country ski alumna Jasmi Joensuu will represent Team Finland; three DU skiing alumni have been named to the Canadian ski team (Amelia Smart, Trevor Philp and Erik Read); and skiing alumna Andrea Komšić will ski for Croatia. This group of eight athletes is the largest contingent of Pioneers to go the same Olympic Games since 10 Pioneers participated in the 1972 Winter Games in Sapporo, Japan.

Increasing Crime Rates Hit University Neigborhood
Statistics generally don’t lie. According to published police reports, property crimes increased in the consolidated University and University Park neighborhoods in 2021. The trend included double-digit increases versus 2020 in personal property crime, robberies, burglaries and car theft. The few areas of improvement were drug arrests and bike thefts. 2022: The Year of the NCAA Power Shift
The NCAA Board of Governors agreed to a new constitution to govern college sports, sending the revised document to a vote by the association’s full membership this month. Damien Goddard: First in Space for DU
The inimitable Damien Goddard, the founder of LetsGoDU, was recognized Wednesday by the University of Denver as the first DU graduate venturing to space. Following in the footsteps of Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk and William Shatner, Goddard will be blasting into the great unknown on January 15th, 2022.
