CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — Taking a hockey road trip to Providence and Boston is a great way for a college hockey fan to spend a fall weekend.
First, there is the gorgeous fall foliage on the college campuses and everywhere else. Then there are the New England accents, which can be so much fun to imitate (when they aren’t hurling expletives). And of course, the promise of east coast Italian-American food is always enticing. But the heart of it all is six periods of fabulous college hockey.
Watching our Pioneers play two other nationally elite programs in front of sellout crowds in both cities last weekend, including a record student turnout at Boston College, was simply awesome.
US Newsreleased their annual rankings and DU fell from last year’s #105 ranking to #124 in the recently released National Universities rankings. As recently as 2020, Denver jumped 17 places to rank 80th among national universities. Denver fell back to #93 two years ago and tumbled 12 more places last year and 19 more slots this year. Does the University of Denver need a new or upgraded arena for non-hockey events? It’s a big question that’s been on the minds of DU’s athletic and academic administrations for a while now, as the rest of the Summit League continues to upgrade its athletic facilities, leaving DU’s Ritchie Center farther behind and now well older than the students who play there. Add rising interest rates and construction costs to the mix along wih the need for a major donor(s) and the possibility of a major new athletic facility looks challenging at best over the short term. The Big Ten finalized media rights contracts with CBS, Fox, and NBC last year that will total more than $8 billion over seven years, making it the most lucrative conference rights deal in the history of college athletics. The Summit League, like most mid-majors, is left to pick up the crumbs and rely on a few hardy fans who follow the other Division I sports not called football. The rumblings have been going on for weeks as the Pac-12 has continued to struggle to finalize their TV deal and hold the already falling apart conference together. Both the University of Colorado and Arizona, current members of the Pac-12 Conference, had been openly courted by Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark. As a result, today’s announcement by CU that they are returning to the Big 12 – the conference the Buffaloes called home from 1996 to 2010 (and were members of the Big Eight that preceded the Big 12 from 1948-1995) today was hardly a surprise. The conference jump by the Buffs is yet another realignment domino to fall and the results of this one may even impact the University of Denver. Earlier this week, University of Denver Chancellor Jeremy Haefner announced in an email to faculty and students that Renea Morris, Vice Chancellor for Marketing and Communications (MarComm), is leaving her position at DU to pursue other opportunities. In the announcement, Chancellor Jeremy Haefner indicated that he will lead a national search to fill the position.
