In the spirit of Capt. Andrew Luck, our own “Armchair General” Puck Swami has written a flowery “Civil War”-style letter to his wife about last weekend’s DU hockey sweep of rival Colorado College. We invite you to click and play “Ashokan Farewell’ as background music and read the letter aloud in the best Ken Burns-narrator voice you can muster. You can almost hear the strains of the Crimson-and-Gold fiddles playing in Denver’s Camp…
Wednesday, the Eighth Day of November, in the year of our Lord, 2023.
My Dearest Wife:
I am grateful to the Lord above for providing me this quill and paper with which to report to you, my beloved bride of long forbearance, that it has been four days since the smoke of battle has lifted from the November weekend scrap for the Gold Pan trophy. As you will read, the news is gratifying… Continue reading Puck Swami’s Civil War Letter on Winning the Gold Pan→

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — Taking a hockey road trip to Providence and Boston is a great way for a college hockey fan to spend a fall weekend.
First, there is the gorgeous fall foliage on the college campuses and everywhere else. Then there are the New England accents, which can be so much fun to imitate (when they aren’t hurling expletives). And of course, the promise of east coast Italian-American food is always enticing. But the heart of it all is six periods of fabulous college hockey.
Watching our Pioneers play two other nationally elite programs in front of sellout crowds in both cities last weekend, including a record student turnout at Boston College, was simply awesome.

Does the University of Denver need a new or upgraded arena for non-hockey events? It’s a big question that’s been on the minds of DU’s athletic and academic administrations for a while now, as the rest of the Summit League continues to upgrade its athletic facilities, leaving DU’s Ritchie Center farther behind and now well older than the students who play there. Add rising interest rates and construction costs to the mix along wih the need for a major donor(s) and the possibility of a major new athletic facility looks challenging at best over the short term. Continue reading New DU Multi-sport Arena is Needed but Faces Hurdles→
The Big Ten finalized media rights contracts with CBS, Fox, and NBC last year that will total more than $8 billion over seven years, making it the most lucrative conference rights deal in the history of college athletics. The Summit League, like most mid-majors, is left to pick up the crumbs and rely on a few hardy fans who follow the other Division I sports not called football. Now that the Pac-12 Conference (now the Pac-4) is nearly a distant memory, there is speculation about a possible merger between the Pac and the Mountain West to further dilute a once-great conference. Continue reading Conference Realignment Is Just Getting Started→
The rumblings have been going on for weeks as the Pac-12 has continued to struggle to finalize their TV deal and hold the already falling apart conference together. Both the University of Colorado and Arizona, current members of the Pac-12 Conference, had been openly courted by Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark. As a result, today’s announcement by CU that they are returning to the Big 12 – the conference the Buffaloes called home from 1996 to 2010 (and were members of the Big Eight that preceded the Big 12 from 1948-1995) today was hardly a surprise. The conference jump by the Buffs is yet another realignment domino to fall and the results of this one may even impact the University of Denver.
