DU’s grounds crew delivers for Pioneer teams & fans

As DU fall sports began several weeks ago, one DU team was in mid-season form. The DU grounds crew was working overtime to deliver some of the best practice and game venues in Division I Athletics. If you attend soccer games at CIBER Field, lacrosse games at Peter Barton Stadium, or play intramural athletics on Diana Wendt Sports Field, you know that the Pioneer facilities and grounds are impeccably maintained. Denver women’s soccer at a crossroads

Photo: Denver women take the field in Vail against Northern Colorado Monday afternoon. Denver won the opener in the 88th minute, 1-0, on a goal by freshman Maya Roston.

For the longest time, Denver women’s soccer was DU’s featured Fall sport, reaching a peak in 2013 when they completed a 20-2-1 season. That season ended with a first round NCAA Tournament loss to Colorado at CIBER Field in front of 1,394 fans.  The following February, USA Today named DU as one of the top 10 places to play women’s soccer.

When Denver centerback  Kortne Ford (above/Photo by David Grooms) carved open the Clemson backline to convert Alex Underwood’s cross to score the game-winning goal in Dec.2’s NCAA Soccer Quarterfinal with a minute left in the game to book a first-ever DU berth in the College Cup, it set off a big celebration for every Pioneer fan.

DU Overcomes Doubters and Mavericks for Summit League Co-Championship

Where was the bottom this season for DU women’s soccer? Was it finishing last with zero points in the six team Colorado Cup? Was it a 1-4 start in the non-league games? Men’s Hockey Sweeps Spartans

Denver hockey rolled into East Lansing Michigan and exited with a sweep. On Friday, Denver defeated the Spartans 2-1 behind Tanner Jaillet’s 19 of 20 saves along with goals from super freshman Henrik Borgstrom and sophomore Jarid Lukosevicius. On Saturday afternoon, Troy Terry scored one goal and another nearly invisible goal to lead the Pio’s to a 3-1 victory. The Pioneers have moved to 4-2 behind a four-game winning streak with one of their top scorers, Dylan Gambrell, out of the lineup with injury. Next series: At Magness Arena next weekend vs. Western Michigan.
