Denver women’s lacrosse (#5, 5-4 MPSF) traveled to Eugene, Oregon and downed the the Oregon Ducks (#6, 4-4 MPFS) 11-9 to earn an automatic berth at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation playoffs in Stanford, California April 28th – May 1st. The increasingly dangerous Pioneers finished their league season by winning 3 in a row. The final remaining league games will determine seeding for the tournament. In Florida, state officials issued their first-ever requirement for girls to wear protective hard helmets in lacrosse. The changes have sparked a firestorm by players and coaches who believe the headgear requirement is unnecessary. Already, modified girls rules attempt to limit physical contact. Gymnast Nina McGee achieved a DU first when she became an NCAA champion on floor. While competing in the NCAA Championship all-around, she captured the top score on her bread and butter floor exercise and captured Denver’s first ever gymnastics title. Competing as an individual entrant, she took on gymnasts from the nation’s best programs such as Florida, Alabama, Oklahoma, and UCLA and earned the top step to a standing ovation from the crowd in Fort Worth, Texas.
From all accounts she became a clear crowd favorite as she worked through the all-around rotations culminating in her remarkable floor routine.
Her back story includes a 5-year battle overcoming serious injuries through raw determination and her eventual climb to the top of collegiate gymnastics. Denver’s toughest athlete is set to compete against the nation’s best.
DU gymnast Nina McGee will be heading to Fort Worth later this week to compete in the women’s NCAA Gymnastics championships as an individual qualifier. Unlike many other competitions, McGee will be traveling to the event without any of her teammates. She will be a contender for the national all-around championship after finishing 11th overall last year. The championships will be held at the Fort Worth Convention Center Arena, April 15-16. DU athletic teams are loaded with great athletes in their respective sports. But the toughest athlete at DU is senior gymnast Nina McGee. As the Denver Post reported a year ago, McGee performs with two rods that run from from her knees to her ankles. Her severe shin splints were caused by stress fractures of the tibia in both legs. That put her athletic career in jeopardy. After consultation with medical experts and coaches, the decision was made to insert metal rods to support the tibia in both legs from the knees to the ankles. Puck Swami challenged DU to put on Big Events in his article Think Big, Denver . So we have put together the LetsGoDU Big Event Super Survey. In the survey, we provide a Big Event concept and venue. Of course, we know that it takes years to work out schedules and plan such events, but we wanted to paint a picture of what it would take to create such an event that would draw local and regional interest.

Denver Boone, mascot handlers, and LetsGoDU spent Sunday running down leads to find the whereabouts of iconic Mega-Boone. The gigantic banner, located in the DU student section at Coors Field, was left unattended when Denver Boone was ejected for having no head cover.
A logical person has to question this Coors Field policy. According to their published rules and regulations – Clothing which conceals a guest’s face is prohibited, including but not limited to, costumes and masks – So, how do 3 out of 4 (below) make it to the ‘old ball game’. Traditional approaches to drawing students to sporting events is no longer working. This trend is neither unique nor exclusive to the University of Denver.
The Wall Street Journal conducted a study on the declining student attendance, mainly targeting football, but relevant to other sports as well.
