DU Gymnastics Wins Season Opener at Super 16 in Las Vegas

The 2024 gymnastics season has officially started! Sixteen teams traveled to Las Vegas last weekend for the “Mean Girls” Super 16 Gymnastics Championships. This is the second annual Super 16 season opener in Las Vegas and the first time DU was in attendance. It was a great way to start the season, competing on the podium at the Orleans Arena. Most of the top teams were there, and they looked ready for the season. The teams were divided into four sessions of four schools each. DU competed in the first session on January 5th, going head to head with Washington, Illinois, and San Jose State. The meet was live-streamed on YouTube @super16gym. NCAA President Charlie Baker Engineering DI Demise

NCAA President, Charlie Baker, is proposing the development of a DI super-subdivision that would allow the wealthiest athletic programs, a mix of the current/new Big 10, Big XII, ACC and SEC members, to directly compensate athletes through the use of “educational trust funds,” manage and fund NIL payments & revenue sharing, and allow for a separate set of governance rules for the super-subdivision. All this from Baker while trying to maintain the current NCAA national championship model across all existing Division I sports, except FBS football, which runs and manages the College Football Playoff. DU Women’s Lacrosse is In it to Win it All

Denver women’s Head lacrosse coach Liza Kelly and her team are all-in for a serious run at a national championship this spring. The team is returning four All-Americans along with experience across the board with the addition of some exceptional graduate transfers. The roster upgrades started soon after DU’s otherwise-perfect 22-0 last season ended on May 26,  when DU finally fell to #1 Northwestern in Cary, North Carolina in the NCAA semifinals, the high water mark for DU’s history in the women’s game. Since that time, it has been clear that the program is doing everything in its power to return to Cary this spring to bring about a different result – a national title. Overachieving Fall Sports Come to a Close

An over-performing, cobbled-together volleyball team finished with a share of the regular season Summit League Title with three other teams. They traveled to Vermillion, S.D. for the Summit League Tournament, won the first round, advanced to the semifinal and fell Monday to the Omaha Mavericks in five sets (21-25, 21-25, 25-20, 25-15, 14-16). The Pioneers battled back from a two-game deficit and lost in extra points. The team started 1-7 in non-conference play with a new coach and the loss of key players. Denver’s Carreau Wins National Championship

Denver’s newest DI sport, Triathlon, did not win the team NCAA Triathlon championship at Tempe, Arizona. The DU team finished fourth. However, a freshman, Maira Carreau, had a historic performance for the University of Denver, earning the top spot on the podium Saturday and an individual national championship for DU. Carreau has three more years of eligibility remaining and if head coach Barbara Perkins recruits and develops a few more stars, Denver will be in the hunt for their first women’s team title to add to DU’s 33 national team championships. Triathlon may be on track to add another national championship team title to the rafters of Magness Arena. Continue reading Denver’s Carreau Wins National Championship
