DU Gymnastics hosted an open practice on Friday, welcoming fans to the practice gym, and showing off new routines and skills. The team is at the halfway mark of their preseason practices and is looking good! They have welcomed four freshmen this year who all look like they can factor into the team’s lineups. Weekend Full of Disappointment, Surprise, and Success
There was the joy of a Hocktoberfest hockey win and a road win from DU men’s soccer to clinch their 9th league regular season title. DU volleyball has emerged from the non-conference ashes to become a Summit League threat after 3-2 home wins against St. Thomas and arch-rival South Dakota. An upset tie with Augustana was a shock (the Vikings then beat CC in regulation on Saturday) but the biggest surprise was the shootout loss by #1 seed DU women’s soccer to #4 seed Omaha in the Summit League tournament semifinals at Pioneer Field to end their season. Denver Completes Another Successful Week
DU men’s and women’s soccer teams earned 1-0 victories this week against Western Illinois and UMKC, respectively. DU women’s soccer (9-1-5) secured their win at the friendly confines of Pioneer Field while DU men (7-2-4, 3-0-1) defeated WIU in Macomb, Illinois. New DU Multi-sport Arena is Needed but Faces Hurdles
Does the University of Denver need a new or upgraded arena for non-hockey events? It’s a big question that’s been on the minds of DU’s athletic and academic administrations for a while now, as the rest of the Summit League continues to upgrade its athletic facilities, leaving DU’s Ritchie Center farther behind and now well older than the students who play there. Add rising interest rates and construction costs to the mix along wih the need for a major donor(s) and the possibility of a major new athletic facility looks challenging at best over the short term. Soccer Teams Drop First Games of the Season
Both DU men’s and women’s soccer fell in the past week to Portland and Colorado, respectively. The men’s team then followed their loss with a heart-stopping draw vs. Seattle on the road Monday night. Denver Soccer Teams Collect Four Shutouts to Remain Unbeaten
DU women’s soccer (4-0-4) continued their unbeaten ways. Thursday, they routed Colgate 6-0 at Pioneer Field. Liv Moritz, Samantha Dreiling, Camryn MacMillan and Sydney Sharp all scored along with Ella Frost two tallies. On Sunday, the Pioneers travelled to Eugene, Oregon to take on the Oregon Ducks. Star freshman Liv Moritz led DU with two goals in the second half while Denver outshot the Ducks 30-8. Denver Volleyball Faces Massive Challenges
Denver volleyball just fell to 0-6, losing all their games on the road and won just one game while dropping 18 during that span.
How should fans view Denver Volleyball this season following coaching changes and a player exodus? Denver volleyball has always been one of the most successful fall programs at DU. With only five losing seasons, all in their first 13 years, after turning D1 in 1999, they have not experienced a losing season since 2011 while racking up three 27-win seasons and seven single-digit loss seasons along with numerous NCAA appearances and conference titles. DU’s 2002 volleyball team had the programs worst record at 7-20 but the other four losing record teams were able to scrape together 13-16 wins. Denver Men’s and Women’s Soccer Teams Complete a Solid Week
Denver men’s (2-0-2) and women’s soccer (2-0-4) had a solid week in non-conference action. Women’s soccer started their season with four consecutive ties. Then, last week they added two consecutive wins over Northern Colorado from the Big Sky Conference on Thursday and Sunday against North Carolina State from the ACC. The 2-0 win over Northern Colorado was expected but the 4-2 win over the Wolfpack was a big boost for new women’s head coach Julianne Sitch.
