We’re about a week and a half removed from the day the news broke that former University of Denver Hockey head coach Jim Montgomery would leave the Pioneers and to the Dallas Stars in the same role. Now that some time has passed and the goodbyes have been said, attention has shifted to who might replace Montgomery behind the bench. Denver ends Notre Dame’s season for second straight year, advances to Quarterfinal vs. Albany

Throughout the 2018 season, the Denver Pioneers men’s lacrosse team has had issues playing a full 60 minutes. A fourth quarter collapse against Duke in February cost them a big early season nonconference victory and a first quarter mishap against Notre Dame dug the Pioneers into a hole they couldn’t climb out of. Both of their regular season losses were directly related to the Pioneers’ inability to play to their potential for a full four quarters of lacrosse. Today, however, against Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament, Denver played great lacrosse all game long and came away with a big 9-7 victory to end the Irish’s season for the second year in a row. Pioneers’ season ends at hands of defending national champs
It wasn’t a guarantee that the Denver Pioneers women’s lacrosse program would even be at this point, playing the top-seeded Maryland Terrapins in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, a week ago. After a great regular season and BIG EAST Tournament that ended at the hands of the Florida Gators in the conference title game, Denver remained on the bubble heading into Selection Sunday. Thanks to a number of major conference victories and a signature nonconference victory over the Colorado Buffaloes, Denver was awarded a spot in the NCAA Tournament. A Western Rivalry Rekindled: Denver & Notre Dame to write next postseason chapter
There’s history, there’s proximity, and there’s emotion. It’s more than fitting that the University of Denver Pioneers and No. 7-seeded University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish would cross paths in First Round of the NCAA men’s lacrosse tournament to only deepen the storied, westernmost rivalry. Building the Beast: Revelations from Trevor Baptiste’s understudies

Denver sun sets on Jim Montgomery era, should rise on David Carle

For the second time in just over five years, the University of Denver is searching for a replacement for a legendary hockey head coach. Five years ago, Peg Bradley-Doppes and her staff had the unenviable task of finding a worthy replacement for 19-year head coach George Gwozdecky. Though it seemed like a questionable hire at the time, they knocked it out of the park with Jim Montgomery. Now, with as much momentum as the program has had in over a decade, newly hired Athletic Director Karlton Creech and his advisors (which include Bradley-Doppes and current AD Ron Grahame) have an important hiring decision to make. The right one is already staring them squarely in the face. Continue reading Denver sun sets on Jim Montgomery era, should rise on David Carle
Denver Women’s Lacrosse Goes Dancing

Unseeded Denver women’s lacrosse (12-6, 7-4) was rewarded for an excellent season with several signature wins and a run to the Big EAST title game and loss to #6 seed Florida. The Pioneers will play unseeded High Point (17-2, 7-0) for the chance to play the tournaments #1 seed Maryland in the second round.

Big EAST Final Loss Sends Men’s Lacrosse Packing in NCAA First Round
Denver’s 8-3 Saturday loss to Georgetown cost the Pioneers a home playoff game in the First Round of the NCAA playoffs. Denver (12-3, 5-0) was nearly guaranteed a home first round game if they would have won the Big EAST Championship title game. Denver was on the RPI bubble but strength of schedule, both out-of-conference and in-conference, further hurt their home field hopes. That, combined with DU’s league championship finals loss probably popped the home-field bubble in the minds of the selection committee.

Denver Falls Flat in Big EAST Tournament Final, 8-3
It took nearly 28 minutes for Denver to score – and it got worse from there. Credit Georgetown and their red-hot goalkeeper Nick Marrocco. The Hoyas allowed Denver few easy looks and pushed the Denver offense to the perimeter and created uncharacteristic Pioneer turnovers all four quarters in the 8-3 Pioneer loss.
