Denver was leading by a narrow 7-6 margin at halftime Sunday afternoon at Peter Barton Stadium but used an explosive second half to blow by the Canisius Golden Griffins. The Pioneers scored eight consecutive goals in the third quarter before the Golden Griffins Jacob Buck stopped the bleeding. Denver went on to score five more consecutive goals to start the fourth period to hit the 20 goal mark before emptying their bench. Final score 20-9. Denver hockey (23-8-1, 16-6-0) trailed Omaha, 2-0, in the second period when Brett Stapley finally scored for the Pioneers at 17:10. Trailing by a goal heading into the final twenty minutes, DU would need freshman goaltender Matt Davis to hold Omaha down until the Pioneers found their scoring touch. DU responded with three powerplay goals in the final period to run away with the game. Continue reading Denver Storms back from two-goal deficit to Defeat Omaha→

Denver men’s lacrosse (2-2) took on Jacksonville (4-1) at Peter Barton Stadium Saturday afternoon. The surprising Dolphins came into Denver riding signature wins over Duke and Marquette. Denver played JU even, taking a lead early in the second half, but the Dolphins took full advantage of their scoring chances to win 11-9. Well sports fans, and statistics lovers, welcome to week 8 of NCAA gymnastics! This is the week in every season that the national rankings switch from average scores to National Qualifying Scores (NQS). The NQS is determined by the gymnasts’ top 7 scores, of which at least 3 must be from away meets, dropping the highest score, and then averaging the remaining 5 scores. This takes away some of the advantages of teams who have friendly home judges and who have great home crowds. Each week from here out, teams have a chance to improve their NQS by nudging out lower scores with higher ones. This is when consistency and constant improvement becomes really important.
Denver hockey travels to Omaha this upcoming weekend. The two-game set will feature a clash of styles and cultures – both on and off the ice. A casual review of Twitter comments proves the point:
Denver (10-20, 6-11) backed into the Summit League playoffs before Thursday night’s game at St Thomas (9-20, 3-14). The Tommies had already exited stage left along with North Dakota, both missing out on the Summit League Tournament in Sioux Falls. But the Pioneers desperately needed to stop an end-of-season swoon, losers of 6 of their last 7. The Pioneers looked lethargic the first half, trailing 31-29. But Denver caught fire in the final twenty minutes with 81% shooting from the field and 8 of 9 from beyond the arc as Denver scorched the nets for 62 second-half points in the 91-80 road trip win. It’s safe to conclude that the current NCAA Division I designation as we currently know it is going to break apart. When? Who knows, but it’s going to happen much sooner than any of us, even the most cynical, can imagine. The University of Denver – owners of 11 of the past 12 Division I-AAA Directors Cups, 33 Division I national championships, and countless other conference titles – can hunker down and wait for the inevitable split but given the program’s proud history and desire to sustain that success, that would be a massive mistake.
