Pioneers Sweep RedHawks in Dominant Fashion to Advance to Frozen Faceoff

The #3 and top-seeded Denver Pioneers (27-8-1) are moving on. Thanks to a dominant, if a bit choppy 5-1 victory (that should have been 7-1) over the eighth-seeded Miami University RedHawks (7-27-2), the Pios officially advanced to the NCHC Tournament Semifinals at the Frozen Faceoff in St. Paul, Minnesota next weekend. With the sweep of the RedHawks at Magness Arena, the Pioneers remain the only program in the NCHC to advance to the semifinal round in each and every iteration of the tournament since the conference’s inception in 2013. Depth, Special Teams Shine as Pioneers Top RedHawks to Grab 1-0 Series Lead

Playoff hockey is a completely different beast. Regular season hockey? It has its challenges, sure. But playoff hockey is where the proverbial men are separated from the boys. Playoff hockey is where legends are made. For the #3 and top-seeded Denver Pioneers (26-8-1) who hadn’t played a postseason game at Magness Arena since 2019 due to the Covid-19 pandemic (2020 postseason was canceled and the entire 2021 NCHC Tournament was played in Grand Forks, North Dakota), their first postseason game of 2022, against the eighth-seeded Miami University RedHawks (7-26-2), was a test and despite an early penalty-killing hiccup, they passed with flying colors. The Pioneers used a strong start to the second period to pull away from the RedHawks and cruise to a 5-2 victory in Game One of the best-of-three NCHC Quarterfinal round. St. Thomas Athletic Facilities Expansion Plans Denied

Landlocked St. Thomas University was looking to expand its footprint in St. Paul, Minnesota as they approached the private Town and Country Club with an unsolicited offer. Pioneers Sweep Gold Pan Season Series to Win Second Penrose Cup

Trophies are hard to win in hockey. Whether it’s a rivalry trophy or a championship trophy, they’re extremely difficult to win. The #3 Denver Pioneers (25-8-1, 18-6-0-1-0-0 NCHC, 53 pts), however, have made it look easy this year. After retaining the Gold Pan with a sweep of the in-state rival Colorado College Tigers (9-23-3, 6-17-1-2-1-0 NCHC, 18 pts) back in January, they made it a season sweep with a 5-2 victory a clinched the Penrose Cup thanks to Omaha’s regulation victory over North Dakota earlier in the evening. Like last night in Colorado Springs and the prior three games between DU and CC, the result was never really in doubt but this one, this victory in front of 6,321 people and a sold-out Magness Arena, meant just a bit more. Pioneers Earn Fourth-Straight Shutout of Tigers to Keep Share of Penrose Cup Within Reach

Just like the first two games between the two fierce Front Range rivals, the result in the rivalry’s second-ever game at Ed Robson Arena was never in doubt. The #3 Denver Pioneers (24-8-1, 17-6-0-1-0-0 NCHC, 50 pts) scored on the Colorado College Tigers (9-21-3, 6-16-1-2-1-0, 18 pts) less than four minutes into the game and never looked back. They scored four more times and Magnus Chrona stopped all 19 CC shots to make it four straight shutouts against the Tigers dating back to last season – the first time either team has recorded at least three straight in the seven-decade history of this rivalry – and head back to Magness Arena tomorrow night with at least a chance to earn a share of the Penrose Cup. Denver Storms back from two-goal deficit to Defeat Omaha

Denver hockey (23-8-1, 16-6-0) trailed Omaha, 2-0, in the second period when Brett Stapley finally scored for the Pioneers at 17:10. Trailing by a goal heading into the final twenty minutes, DU would need freshman goaltender Matt Davis to hold Omaha down until the Pioneers found their scoring touch. DU responded with three powerplay goals in the final period to run away with the game. Continue reading Denver Storms back from two-goal deficit to Defeat Omaha
