This past weekend, DU Women’s Lacrosse (12-1, 10-0) celebrated senior day and swept Villanova 18-10 and 19-9 to complete an undefeated BIG EAST regular season 10-0. The Pioneers will advance to the conference tournament as the #1 seed. But before then, they will have the opportunity to avenge their only loss of the season this Thursday at Peter Barton Stadium against the CU Buffs in non-conference play. Pioneers Throttle St John’s, 19-11
It was Senior Day at Peter Barton Stadium Saturday. Denver (10-3, 8-1) faced the St. John’s (1-9, 0-9) Red Storm in a BIG EAST match-up. Denver scored at a goal-a-minute pace the first 8 minutes, allowing no goals en route to a 15-0 lead, and then coasting to the 19-11 win behind reserve players. The Pioneers needed the win to keep pace with Georgetown (10-1, 9-1), whose league season is now complete. Continue reading Pioneers Throttle St John’s, 19-11
Conference Championships Highlight DU’s Weekend
Over this past weekend, DU earned two NCAA Tournament soccer berths, one by the old-fashioned way and the other via a COVID shortened season. Also, Denver women’s swimming won the Summit League in Fargo, North Dakota. First place women’s and men’s lacrosse teams experienced overtime highs and lows on road trips but both remain in first place in the BIG EAST. #5 Pioneers Score 10 in Third Quarter to Cruise to 17-10 Victory Over #20 Villanova
Ethan Walker, Denver’s all-time points leader and 2nd-leading scorer in 2021, didn’t dress but it made no difference for a #5 Denver Pioneers (9-2, 7-0 BIG EAST) offense that scored 17 goals, 10 in the third quarter alone, against the #20 Villanova Wildcats (4-3, 4-3 BIG EAST). Jackson Morrill led the way with a hat trick while his former Yale teammate Lucas Cotler scored twice to account for half of Denver’s third-quarter offense on another perfect Colorado Saturday afternoon at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium. Denver added one more in the fourth to salt away the 17-10 victory and remain unbeaten in BIG EAST play. Weekend Update: Heartbreak and Hope
It was a bittersweet several days for DU athletes and fans this week as Denver competed in season-ending competitions which, ultimately, were decided in their opponents’ favor. This is a reminder to all of us why athletic competitions can provide great exhilaration as well as gut-wrenching disappointment which oftentimes hinge on a single moment. In each case, Denver was positioned for success but came up just short.
Pioneers Remain Unbeaten in BIG EAST Behind Ethan Walker’s Record-Breaking Performance
There is a new name at the top of the Denver Men’s Lacrosse all-time points leaderboard. With a goal near the end of the first half against the Marquette Golden Eagles (1-6, 0-5 BIG EAST), Ethan Walker officially passed Wes Berg on DU’s all-time points list with his 256th of his storied career as a Pioneer. Thanks to that goal, two hat tricks from Jack Hannah and JJ Sillstrop, and an impressive 8-save, 61.5% performance by goaltender Jack Thompson, the Pioneers (8-2, 6-0 BIG EAST) beat the Golden Eagles 16-6 at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium on a picturesque early spring Saturday afternoon in Denver. Weekend Update: Pioneers Rack Up Wins
Both of DU’s lacrosse teams remain undefeated in Big East play with three more wins. DU’s women’s soccer and volleyball cemented regular season Summit League Championships. Men’s and women’s tennis won their weekend tilts and DU golfers heated up courses out west during non-conference play. Gymnastics is still in play for a national championship. Sometimes we take all this for granted but Denver teams keep piling up spring wins with a combined record of 61-16-1.
Weekend Update: DU Women’s Teams Lead Weekend of Sweeps
Men’s soccer (4-2) had an important road sweep in Kansas City as DU defeated the Roos 4-1 and 1-0. Jacob Stensson had two goals and an assist in game one and the game winning assist on Kengo Ohira’s game winner in game two. Continue reading Weekend Update: DU Women’s Teams Lead Weekend of Sweeps

A couple of months ago, TD Ierlan, the greatest faceoff specialist in men’s collegiate lacrosse, announced his plans to transfer to Denver and join his former Yale teammates, Jackson Morrill and Lucas Cotler. Just this morning, according to US Lacrosse Magazine, Ierlan himself confirmed that he has been accepted at the University of Denver and will be eligible to play against Villanova next Sunday. The program has not yet confirmed the transfer, however. As a reminder for those who forgot what the quarter system is, this transfer is made possible by Denver’s academic system. Winter Quarter ends on Friday which means Ierlan’s transfer for academic purposes will be made official when the new academic term ‘begins’ Saturday.
